Male pattern baldness treatment in Gurgaon

A receding hairline or thinning crown is easiest to treat early, while the follicles are still producing hair. Dermatologist and trichologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar confirms the diagnosis with trichoscopy, stages it, and builds a medical plan you can keep up, adding procedures only where they will help.

Quick answer

How is male pattern baldness treated in Gurgaon?

Male pattern baldness is treated with prescribed medicines, usually topical minoxidil and, where suitable, finasteride, which slow or stop thinning and often thicken existing hair. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar confirms the diagnosis with trichoscopy first and may add PRP, GFC or mesotherapy. Results are judged at 6 to 12 months and need ongoing treatment.

Understanding male pattern baldness

What male pattern baldness is

Male pattern baldness, or androgenetic alopecia, is the commonest cause of hair loss in men. It is inherited, from either side of the family, and is driven by dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone made from testosterone. In men with sensitive follicles, DHT shortens each growth cycle, so with every cycle the hair grows back thinner and shorter until some follicles stop producing visible hair.

It usually starts with recession at the temples, thinning at the crown, or both, and can begin as early as the late teens or twenties. Testosterone levels are usually normal; the difference lies in how the follicles respond. Because the process is gradual, there is a long window in which treatment can hold on to hair that would otherwise be lost, and that window is widest early on.

Sudden heavy shedding, round bald patches, a red, scaly or painful scalp, or hair loss in a beard or eyebrows is not typical of pattern baldness and should be examined before treatment is chosen.

The Norwood stages and what they mean for treatment

The Norwood scale grades male pattern baldness from stage 1 to stage 7. Your stage helps set realistic goals.

Stages 1 and 2

Little or slight recession at the temples. Often noticed in the twenties. Trichoscopy may already show finer hairs. Medical treatment started now protects the most hair.

Stage 3 and 3 vertex

A deeper M-shaped hairline, sometimes with early crown thinning. This is the stage at which most men first seek help, and medicines often stabilise it well.

Stages 4 and 5

The receding front and the thinning crown grow larger and the band of hair between them narrows. Medicines can still preserve and thicken remaining hair, and procedures may add to this.

Stages 6 and 7

The front and crown have joined into a large bald area with hair left at the sides and back. Medicines cannot regrow follicles that have gone; a hair transplant assessment is the realistic route for coverage.

At Le Dermaire

How male pattern baldness is treated

A medical plan first, procedures second, with a fair review built in.

1

History and trichoscopy

Dr. Tanya asks about family history, when the thinning began, supplements, gym products and medicines, then examines the scalp under magnification to confirm pattern hair loss and rule out look-alikes.

2

Staging and photographs

Your Norwood stage is recorded and standard photographs are taken, so progress can be judged objectively at review rather than in the bathroom mirror.

3

Your medical plan

Prescribed medicines matched to your stage, age and health, with clear instructions on how to use them, what side effects to watch for and what to expect in the first few months.

4

Review and add-ons

Progress is checked every few months. PRP, GFC, mesotherapy or laser may be added if they suit you, and you get a written quote first.

Treatment options

Male pattern baldness treatment options explained

Topical minoxidil lengthens the growth phase of the follicle and increases blood flow around it. It slows thinning and thickens existing hair in many men, particularly at the crown. It is used every day, usually as a solution or foam. A temporary increase in shedding in the first weeks is common and a sign that resting hairs are being replaced. Scalp itching or flaking can occur and may be managed by changing the formulation.

Finasteride is a prescription tablet that lowers DHT production, acting on the cause of pattern baldness. It is one of the best-studied treatments for men and stops further thinning in most men who take it, with some regrowth in many. A small minority experience side effects such as reduced libido or erectile changes, and low mood has been reported; these are discussed openly before starting, and the medicine is reviewed if they occur. It also lowers the PSA blood test, which should be mentioned to any doctor checking your prostate. It is prescribed only after a consultation, never bought over the counter.

Other prescription options, such as low-dose oral minoxidil or topical finasteride, may suit some men who cannot use the standard treatments. Whether any of these is right for you depends on your history and is decided with the doctor.

In-clinic procedures such as PRP and GFC, scalp mesotherapy, PRF and non-ablative fractional Er:YAG laser can support medical treatment in men with early to moderate thinning. They work on follicles that are still active and are add-ons to medicines rather than replacements for them.

Side by side

Medicines or PRP for male pattern baldness?

A common question. In most men the answer is medicines first, with PRP or GFC as an optional add-on.

Neither regrows hair on completely bald, shiny areas. For advanced stages, a hair transplant assessment is the realistic option, and medicines still help protect the hair you have.

Where money is usually wasted

Many men spend on oils, shampoos, supplements and procedure packages before starting the medicines that have the strongest evidence. A year of steady medical treatment, started early, usually achieves more than any number of sessions started late. Procedures are worth adding only when they suit your stage.

When medicines are not enough

Where hair transplant fits

Le Dermaire does not perform hair transplants. A transplant moves follicles from the back and sides of the scalp, which are resistant to DHT, to the thinning areas. It can restore coverage where follicles have gone, but it does not stop the remaining native hair from thinning, so medical treatment is usually continued afterwards to protect it.

If your hair loss is advanced, or you want more density at the front than medicines can provide, Dr. Tanya will say so plainly and discuss whether a referral for hair transplant assessment makes sense. Stabilising thinning with medicines for some months beforehand is often advised, as it gives the surgeon a clearer picture of what needs to be covered.

Day to day

What helps, and what to avoid

Helps

  • Starting treatment early, at the first signs of a receding hairline or thinning crown.
  • Using medicines every day; missed doses add up over months.
  • Taking photographs in the same light every three months to judge progress fairly.
  • Washing the scalp regularly, especially with gym sweat and Gurgaon's heat.
  • Mentioning any side effect at review rather than stopping on your own.

Avoid

  • Anabolic steroids and testosterone boosters, which can speed up pattern hair loss.
  • Buying finasteride or other hair medicines without a prescription.
  • Switching products every few weeks before any can work.
  • Hair fibres or tight caps on an inflamed or itchy scalp.
  • Expecting procedures alone to hold thinning without medical treatment.

Why a dermatologist

Male pattern baldness treated by a dermatologist

Not every thinning hairline is pattern baldness. Telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, scalp conditions and, rarely, scarring hair loss can look similar at first. A dermatologist who practises as a trichologist can confirm the diagnosis on trichoscopy, prescribe finasteride and other medicines safely with their side effects explained, and give you an honest view of what treatment can achieve at your stage.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Male pattern baldness FAQs

Can male pattern baldness be stopped?

In most men it can be slowed or stopped with prescribed medicines, and many regain some thickness. It cannot be cured, because the genetic sensitivity of the follicles remains, so treatment is continued long term. Starting early protects the most hair, as medicines cannot revive follicles that have already stopped working.

Can a receding hairline grow back?

Some regrowth at the temples is possible if the follicles are still active, but the hairline responds less well than the crown. The main realistic aim of medical treatment is to stop further recession and thicken the hair that remains. Where the hairline has fully receded, a hair transplant is the usual route to restoring it.

How much does male pattern baldness treatment cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire most men are treated with a consultation and prescribed medicines bought from a pharmacy. If PRP, GFC, mesotherapy or laser is added, the cost depends on the procedure and number of sessions and is quoted in writing first. The consultation fee is ₹1,800, including trichoscopy.

Is finasteride safe?

Finasteride has been used for male pattern baldness for decades and is well studied. Most men have no side effects. A small minority notice reduced libido or erectile changes, and mood changes have been reported. These are discussed before starting and reviewed during treatment. It should be taken only on a doctor's prescription.

How long before minoxidil or finasteride works?

Shedding usually slows within three to six months, and visible thickening, if it comes, takes six to twelve months. A fair trial is about a year of consistent use. A temporary increase in shedding in the first weeks of minoxidil is common and usually means the treatment is starting to work.

How many PRP sessions are needed for male pattern baldness?

A typical PRP or GFC course is three to four sessions about a month apart, then maintenance every few months if the result is worth keeping. PRP works best on early to moderate thinning and alongside medicines. It does not regrow hair on completely bald areas.

What happens if I stop treatment?

The genetic process continues, so thinning usually resumes within months of stopping, and hair gained on treatment is gradually lost. If you want to stop or change a medicine, discuss it at review; sometimes a lower dose or a different option keeps much of the benefit.

Do I need a hair transplant?

Not if your follicles are still active and medicines are holding your hair. A transplant is considered when areas are fully bald or you want more coverage than medicines can give. Le Dermaire does not perform transplants, but Dr. Tanya will tell you honestly if a referral for assessment is worthwhile.

Does gym supplement use cause hair loss?

Anabolic steroids, testosterone and some so-called testosterone boosters can speed up pattern hair loss in men who are genetically prone. Ordinary protein powders are not a proven cause. Bring any supplements to your consultation so they can be reviewed.
