Tattoo removal in Gurgaon

Gradual fading of unwanted tattoos with Q-switched and pico laser, planned by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar. Settings are chosen with Indian skin in mind, and you get an honest view of how far your tattoo is likely to fade before you start.

Quick answer

How does laser tattoo removal work in Gurgaon?

Laser tattoo removal gradually fades a tattoo with Q-switched or pico laser over several sessions, spaced at least 6 to 8 weeks apart. Black ink fades most easily, while green, blue and yellow are more resistant. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar chooses settings with Indian skin in mind and gives a realistic estimate of fading before you start.

The science

How laser removes a tattoo

Tattoo ink sits in the dermis as particles too large for the body to remove. Q-switched and pico lasers deliver extremely short, high-energy pulses that shatter these particles into fragments small enough for the immune system to carry away over the following weeks.

This is why tattoo removal is gradual. Each session breaks up a layer of ink, and the fading continues for weeks afterwards as the body clears it. Pico lasers use even shorter pulses than Q-switched lasers, which can help with some stubborn inks. Different wavelengths target different colours, so the laser is matched to the ink in your tattoo.

Laser tattoo removal aims for significant fading, and for many tattoos near-complete clearance. It cannot promise that every trace will go, and a faint ghost of the design or a change in skin texture can remain.

What affects how fast a tattoo fades

These factors are assessed at consultation to give you a realistic estimate.

Ink colour

Black and dark blue respond best. Red usually responds reasonably. Green, light blue, yellow, white and skin-tone inks are harder and may not clear fully.

Amateur or professional

Amateur tattoos usually have less ink placed less deeply and often fade in fewer sessions. Professional tattoos are denser and more colourful, and need more.

Age and location

Older tattoos have already faded partly. Areas with good circulation, such as the neck and upper arm, tend to clear faster than hands, ankles and feet.

Skin type and health

Darker skin needs gentler settings to protect natural pigment, which can mean more sessions. Smoking and poor circulation slow the clearing of ink.

How treatment works

Planned session by session, with your skin's response guiding the next step.

1

Consultation

Dr. Tanya examines the tattoo and your skin, asks about its age, whether it was done professionally, and any medicines or history of keloids. You get a realistic estimate and a quote.

2

Test spot

A small area may be treated first to see how your skin and the ink respond, especially for darker skin or coloured tattoos.

3

Laser sessions

The area is cleaned and numbed, protective eyewear is worn and the laser is passed over the tattoo. Sessions are spaced at least 6 to 8 weeks apart.

4

Review

Fading is checked before each session and settings are adjusted. Treatment stops when you are happy with the result or when further sessions would add little.

Why rushing sessions costs more

Booking sessions closer together does not remove a tattoo faster. The body needs weeks to clear the broken-down ink, and treating skin that has not recovered raises the risk of scarring and pigment changes. Fewer, well-spaced sessions at safe settings are both kinder to the skin and better value.

Skin type matters

Tattoo removal for Indian skin

The laser cannot tell tattoo ink from the melanin in your skin. On medium to darker skin, the natural pigment can absorb some of the energy, which may lead to hypopigmentation (lighter patches) or hyperpigmentation (darker patches) where the tattoo was.

To reduce this risk, longer wavelengths that the skin absorbs less, such as 1064 nm, are generally preferred for dark ink on darker skin, with conservative settings and longer gaps between sessions. Most pigment changes improve over months, but some lightening can be long-lasting, which is discussed before treatment.

Recent tanning increases the risk, so sun protection on the tattooed area matters throughout the course.

Laser tattoo removal is usually postponed during pregnancy, over active infection, and while taking isotretinoin or medicines that make the skin sensitive to light. Tell the clinic about any history of keloid scars.

Preparation and aftercare

Before and after your session

Before

  • Keep the tattoo out of the sun and avoid tanning for two weeks.
  • Arrive with clean skin, free of creams, lotions and makeup on the area.
  • Wear loose clothing over the tattoo.
  • Bring a list of your current medicines.

After

  • Expect whitening, redness and swelling for a few hours to days.
  • Blisters are common. Do not pop them; keep them clean and covered.
  • Apply the prescribed ointment and avoid swimming, saunas and hot tubs until healed.
  • Do not pick crusts, and use sunscreen on the area between sessions.

Why a dermatologist

Tattoo removal supervised by a dermatologist

Removing a tattoo safely depends on reading the skin as much as the ink. A dermatologist can choose wavelengths and settings that protect darker skin, recognise an allergic reaction to tattoo pigment or a keloid tendency before treatment, check any mole within the tattoo, and manage blistering or pigment changes properly if they occur.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Tattoo removal FAQs

Can a tattoo be removed completely?

Many tattoos can be faded dramatically, and some clear almost completely, but complete removal cannot be promised. Black ink and amateur tattoos respond best, while some colours are resistant. A faint shadow or slight change in skin texture may remain. Dr. Tanya gives you an honest estimate at consultation, based on your tattoo and skin.

How many sessions does tattoo removal take?

It varies widely. Small, amateur, black tattoos may fade well in a handful of sessions, while dense, colourful professional tattoos often need many more. Sessions are spaced at least six to eight weeks apart, so a full course can take a year or longer. A realistic estimate is given after examining the tattoo.

How much does tattoo removal cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the size of the tattoo, the ink colours and the number of sessions, and is quoted in writing after the consultation. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first, and nothing is booked until you have the quote.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

It feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin, often described as sharper than laser hair removal. Numbing cream and cooling make it tolerable for most people, and sessions for small tattoos are short. The area may feel like a mild sunburn for a day or two afterwards.

Is laser tattoo removal safe for Indian skin?

Yes, when settings are matched to the skin. Darker skin carries a higher risk of lighter or darker patches after treatment, so longer wavelengths, conservative settings and well-spaced sessions are used, sometimes after a test spot. Most pigment changes improve with time, and the risk is discussed with you before starting.

Will tattoo removal leave a scar?

When done at appropriate settings with proper aftercare, scarring is uncommon. The risk rises with aggressive treatment, sessions too close together, picking at blisters or crusts, infection, and a personal tendency to keloids. Some tattoos already have scarring from when they were applied, which becomes visible as the ink fades.

Which tattoo colours are hardest to remove?

Black and dark blue are the easiest. Red often responds reasonably well. Green, light blue, yellow, purple, white and skin-tone inks are more resistant and may not clear fully. White and skin-tone inks can occasionally darken with laser, so these are tested on a small area first.
