Premature grey hair treatment in Gurgaon
Greying in your teens or early twenties is usually genetic, but sometimes it points to a vitamin deficiency, a thyroid problem or vitiligo. Dr. Tanya Kochhar looks for anything treatable and gives you an honest picture of what can and cannot change.
Can premature grey hair be treated in Gurgaon?
Premature grey hair is usually genetic, and once established, colour rarely returns. A dermatologist looks for treatable causes such as vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems or vitiligo. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar orders blood tests only where your history suggests them. Correcting a deficiency can slow further greying and occasionally restore some colour. Safer colouring advice is given too.
Premature greying, in short
A plain summary. Every assessment starts from your age, family history and general health.
Why hair turns grey early
Hair gets its colour from melanocytes, pigment cells in the hair bulb that pass melanin into each growing hair. With age, these cells gradually become fewer and less active, and the hair grows in without pigment. Individual hairs do not suddenly turn white; new hair simply grows out grey.
Greying is called premature when it starts well before the usual age for your background. For people of Asian ancestry, before about 25 is the cut-off commonly used, and before about 20 in people of European ancestry. The timing is largely inherited, so early greying in a parent is the strongest single predictor. In most healthy young people with a family history, no other cause is found.
Grey hair that appears suddenly in a patch, especially with white patches of skin nearby, can be a sign of vitiligo or of hair regrowing after alopecia areata. These need a different assessment and are checked for at the examination.
What can contribute to early greying
Often more than one factor is present. Some are fixed; a few can be corrected.
Genetics
The most common reason. If a parent greyed in their twenties, you are more likely to as well, and this part cannot be changed by diet or products.
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Particularly relevant in vegetarians and vegans, and in people on long-term acid-reducing or diabetes medicines. It can also cause tiredness, tingling and mouth ulcers.
Iron, copper and vitamin D
Low iron stores and some other nutritional gaps have been linked with early greying in studies, although the evidence is less certain than for B12.
Thyroid disease
Both underactive and overactive thyroid can affect hair colour and texture, often along with shedding, weight change or fatigue.
Vitiligo and autoimmunity
Vitiligo can whiten hair within or near skin patches. Early greying is also more common in people with other autoimmune conditions.
Smoking and stress
Smoking is consistently associated with earlier greying. Severe stress may play a part, although its effect in everyday life is still being studied.
How premature greying is assessed and managed
The aim is to find anything treatable, not to sell a course of treatment for a mostly genetic trait.
History and examination
Dr. Tanya asks about the age greying began, family history, diet, medicines, smoking and general health, then examines the scalp, beard, brows and skin, with trichoscopy where useful.
Targeted tests
Where the history suggests it, blood tests such as vitamin B12, thyroid function, iron studies and vitamin D are advised. They are not ordered routinely for everyone.
Treat what is found
A confirmed deficiency is corrected, a thyroid problem is treated or referred, and vitiligo is managed on its own terms. Smokers are encouraged and supported to stop.
Cosmetic advice
If you want to cover grey hair, you get practical advice on safer colouring, patch testing and how to recognise a dye allergy early.
Can premature grey hair be reversed?
Usually not, once greying is well established. There is currently no medicine or procedure proven to restore pigment reliably to grey hair caused by genetics or ageing. Anyone offering guaranteed reversal is overselling.
Where a clear cause is found, such as vitamin B12 deficiency or thyroid disease, treating it may slow further greying, and in some people a degree of colour returns in new growth, particularly when the deficiency is corrected early. This cannot be predicted in advance, and it is one reason the tests are worth doing when your history points to them.
Supplements help only when you are actually deficient. Taking high-dose biotin, multivitamins or so-called anti-grey capsules without a confirmed need has not been shown to bring colour back, and high biotin intake can interfere with some blood test results, including thyroid tests.
Premature grey hair treatment cost in Gurgaon
Most people need a consultation and, where relevant, a few blood tests. There is no procedure package to buy for genetic greying.
What your money should go towards
A useful assessment rules out a deficiency or thyroid problem and gives you honest expectations. Paying for long courses of oils, capsules or scalp treatments that claim to reverse genetic greying rarely changes the outcome.
Colouring grey hair safely
Colouring is a perfectly reasonable choice. Most permanent and many so-called herbal or black henna dyes contain para-phenylenediamine (PPD) or related chemicals, which are a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Reactions range from an itchy scalp and flaking to swelling of the face and eyelids, and allergy can develop even after years of trouble-free use.
Do a patch test 48 hours before every colouring, as the dye instructions advise, including with brands you have used before. Stop and seek advice if you get itching, redness or swelling. If an allergy is suspected, the reaction is treated and alternatives with lower allergy risk are discussed. Pure henna without additives colours hair reddish and is less likely to cause allergy, but products labelled as black henna often contain PPD.
A scalp that has become itchy, flaky or red since you started colouring is often labelled dandruff. It may be a dye allergy, and continuing to use the dye can lead to a more severe reaction.
What helps, and what is myth
Helps
- Testing for B12, thyroid or iron when your history suggests a problem.
- A balanced diet, with B12 from dairy, eggs, meat or fortified foods, or a prescribed supplement if vegetarian or vegan.
- Stopping smoking.
- Patch testing before every hair colouring.
Myths
- Plucking one grey hair makes more grow back. It does not, but plucking can damage the follicle.
- Oils, onion juice or curry leaves can reverse genetic greying. There is no good evidence that they do.
- Capsules can restore colour for everyone. They help only a confirmed deficiency.
- Grey hair is always a sign of ill health. In most young people it is simply inherited.
Early greying assessed by a dermatologist
Early grey hair is usually harmless, but it occasionally signals vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disease or vitiligo. A dermatologist practising as a trichologist can tell which tests are worth doing, recognise patchy whitening that has a different cause, and manage dye allergies, while being straightforward about what treatment cannot achieve.

Premature grey hair FAQs
At what age is grey hair considered premature?
For people of Asian background, including Indians, greying before about 25 is commonly considered premature. The usual cut-off is about 20 for people of European background and about 30 for people of African background. A few grey hairs slightly earlier than this, with a family history of early greying, is usually genetic and harmless.
Can premature grey hair turn black again?
Once greying is established, colour rarely comes back. Where a treatable cause such as vitamin B12 deficiency or thyroid disease is found, correcting it may slow further greying and sometimes restores some colour in new growth. For greying that is genetic, no treatment has been shown to reverse it reliably, and claims of guaranteed reversal should be treated with caution.
How much does premature grey hair treatment cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire, the assessment is a consultation with examination and, where your history suggests it, blood tests such as vitamin B12 and thyroid function. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. Any test is explained before it is ordered, and there are no charges that are not quoted to you first.
Which deficiency causes grey hair?
Vitamin B12 deficiency has the clearest link with early greying and is common in vegetarians in India. Low iron stores, copper and vitamin D have also been associated with it in studies. These are checked only when your diet, symptoms or history suggest them, and treated if confirmed.
Does stress cause grey hair?
Stress may contribute, and research suggests severe stress can affect the pigment cells in hair follicles. However, genetics remains by far the main factor in early greying. Reducing stress is good for general health, but it is unlikely on its own to bring colour back to hair that has already turned grey.
Do hair oils or supplements reverse grey hair?
There is no good evidence that oils, onion juice or herbal pastes reverse greying. Supplements help only if you have a confirmed deficiency, and taking them without one has not been shown to restore colour. High-dose biotin can also distort some blood tests, so mention it if you take it before any testing.
Is it safe to dye premature grey hair?
Yes, for most people, with sensible precautions. Many dyes, including some sold as herbal or black henna, contain PPD, a common cause of allergy. Do a patch test 48 hours before each use and stop if you notice itching, redness or swelling. If a reaction occurs, it is treated and lower-risk alternatives are discussed.
