Mounjaro hair loss treatment in Gurgaon
Mounjaro hair loss treatment starts with one question: is this temporary shedding from losing weight quickly, or thinning that the shedding has exposed? Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar examines the scalp under trichoscopy, checks for the nutritional gaps that fast weight loss creates, and treats what is actually there, without asking you to stop a medicine your doctor prescribed. The same approach applies to Ozempic, Wegovy and generic semaglutide.
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss, and how is it treated?
Hair loss on Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Ozempic or Wegovy (semaglutide) is usually telogen effluvium: heavy shedding two to four months after rapid weight loss, linked to the weight loss and low protein or iron intake rather than direct damage to follicles. It is usually temporary. Treatment means finding and correcting the trigger, ruling out pattern hair loss, and adding medical treatment only where needed.
Hair loss on weight-loss injections, in short
Typical patterns, not promises. What applies to you depends on how fast you lost weight, what you are eating, and whether pattern thinning was already starting.
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?
Hair loss is a recognised side effect of the GLP-1 family of weight-loss medicines, which includes semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy and the generic versions sold in India since the semaglutide patent expired in March 2026) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, sold as Zepbound in the US). The US prescribing information for Wegovy reports hair loss in 3.3% of adults on the 2.4 mg dose against 1% on placebo, and in 5.8% on the newer 7.2 mg dose. The Zepbound label reports 4 to 5% across doses against 1% on placebo. Both labels say the hair loss was associated with weight reduction.
The leading explanation is telogen effluvium. Each hair follicle cycles between growing, resting and shedding. A sharp physical stress, such as fast weight loss, a sudden drop in calories and protein, or low iron, pushes many follicles into the resting phase at once. About two to four months later those hairs shed together. The same pattern follows crash diets, bariatric surgery, high fever, dengue and childbirth, which is why many dermatologists see this as a weight-loss effect rather than direct damage by the drug.
Research is still catching up. A study published in The BMJ in July 2026, using health records of people with type 2 diabetes at the University of Pennsylvania, found GLP-1 users had a 37% higher risk of non-scarring hair loss than people on SGLT-2 inhibitors and a 68% higher risk than people on DPP-4 inhibitors, as reported by Medical News Today. The absolute risk was small, around 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 people a year, and an observational study of this kind cannot prove the drug itself is the cause.
Do not stop or skip a weight-loss injection because of hair fall without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it. Shedding usually settles while treatment continues, and the prescriber may slow the dose increase instead.
Why hair falls on weight-loss injections
More than one of these is usually at work, and each needs a different fix. Finding which ones apply is the purpose of the consultation.
Speed of weight loss
The faster weight comes off, the bigger the stress signal to the follicles. Shedding is often heaviest in people who lose a large amount in the first few months.
Too little protein
These medicines reduce appetite strongly. Many people end up eating small meals of rice, roti or fruit with little dal, paneer, eggs, fish or meat, and hair, which is made of protein, is one of the first things the body economises on.
Low iron stores
Iron deficiency is common in Indian women even before weight loss, and eating less makes it worse. Low ferritin, the measure of stored iron, is one of the most frequent findings in prolonged shedding.
Other nutrient gaps
Vitamin D, vitamin B12 and zinc can fall when intake drops, especially on vegetarian diets. They are tested when the history suggests a gap, not as a routine panel.
Thyroid and hormones
Thyroid problems and PCOS are common in people prescribed these medicines and can cause hair loss on their own. They are checked so that the drug is not blamed for something else.
Pattern hair loss unmasked
Heavy shedding can expose male or female pattern thinning that was already starting. This does not recover by itself and needs its own treatment.
Temporary shedding or pattern hair loss: which is it?
The two look alike in the mirror but behave very differently, and the treatment and the money you spend depend on telling them apart.
| Telogen effluvium (shedding) | Pattern hair loss (unmasked) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it starts | Suddenly, two to four months after weight starts falling. | Gradually, often noticed only when shedding draws attention to the scalp. |
| Where | All over the scalp; the ponytail gets thinner. | Men: temples and crown. Women: a widening parting on top, front hairline kept. |
| What you see | Many full-length hairs with a small white bulb at the root. | Fewer and finer hairs in one area; shedding may be modest. |
| Under trichoscopy | Hairs of similar thickness, with many short regrowing hairs as it recovers. | Hairs of varying thickness and many fine, miniaturised hairs. |
| Course | Usually settles within about six months of the trigger easing. | Slowly progressive unless treated. |
| Main treatment | Correct protein, iron and other gaps; reassurance; review. | Minoxidil and other medical treatment, with PRP or GFC as add-ons. |
Both can happen together. Shedding that continues beyond six months, or a parting that keeps widening, is a sign that pattern hair loss may be part of the picture.
How Mounjaro and Ozempic hair loss is treated
A short, practical process. Most people need fewer tests and fewer procedures than they expect.
History
Which medicine and dose, when you started, how much weight you have lost and how fast, what a typical day of eating looks like, and any thyroid, PCOS, anaemia or recent illness. Bring your prescription and any recent blood reports.
Scalp examination
Dr. Tanya examines the scalp and hair under trichoscopy, a magnified view that separates temporary shedding from pattern thinning, and may do a gentle pull test to judge how active the shedding is.
Targeted tests
Blood tests such as ferritin, a blood count, thyroid function, vitamin D and B12 are chosen from your history. Recent reports from your weight-loss doctor are reused where they are adequate.
Plan and review
You get a written plan: nutrition targets that fit an Indian diet, supplements only for proven gaps, and medical treatment if pattern loss is present. Progress is reviewed with photographs over the following months.

Listed in the order they are usually considered. Each step is added only if the one before is not enough.
Protein and calories first
Because appetite is low, protein has to be planned rather than left to chance: a protein source at every meal, such as dal, paneer, curd, eggs, chicken or fish, before the rice or roti. A dietitian working with your weight-loss doctor can set a daily target for your weight. This single change matters more than any hair product.

Iron, vitamin D or B12 are replaced when tests show they are low, at doses and for durations set by the doctor. Taking iron without a test is not advised, and high-dose biotin is not recommended: it has little evidence for hair loss in people who are not deficient and can distort some blood test results.

Pure telogen effluvium often needs no medicine beyond time and nutrition. Minoxidil, as a solution or foam, or in some cases as a low-dose tablet on prescription, is considered when pattern thinning has been unmasked or shedding is prolonged. Oral minoxidil needs a medical review first, particularly on blood-pressure medicines.

Platelet-rich plasma or growth factor concentrate injections from your own blood can support density in pattern hair loss. They are not usually needed for shedding that is already recovering, and are offered only once nutrition and medical treatment are in place.

Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis, which can flare with diet and stress changes, are treated so that itching and scratching do not add to the shedding. Gentle washing does not cause hair loss; the hairs that come out were already shed.

A typical course looks like this. In the first two to four months after starting the injection, while weight is falling fastest, nothing seems wrong with the hair. Then shedding increases, often by handfuls in the shower or on the comb, and usually peaks over the following one to three months. Once weight loss slows and protein and iron intake are corrected, shedding settles, typically within about six months. Short new hairs then appear along the parting and hairline, and volume returns gradually, because scalp hair grows only about a centimetre a month.
Shedding is unlikely to stop overnight, and starting treatment does not reverse hairs that have already entered the resting phase; those will still fall. What treatment changes is how soon the cycle resets and whether hidden pattern thinning is caught early. If shedding continues beyond six months, the scalp is re-examined for chronic telogen effluvium, ongoing deficiency or pattern hair loss.
Hair that falls with its root bulb is not a sign the follicle has died. In telogen effluvium the follicle stays alive and starts a new hair, which is why this kind of hair loss is expected to recover.
Reducing shedding, and when to see a dermatologist
Helps reduce shedding
- Ask your prescriber whether a slower dose increase suits you if weight is falling very fast.
- Build every meal around a protein source, even when portions are small.
- Get ferritin and a blood count checked if you are a woman, vegetarian or have had heavy periods.
- Avoid tight hairstyles, harsh chemical treatments and daily high-heat styling while hair is shedding.
See a dermatologist if
- Shedding continues for more than six months or is getting worse.
- You notice a widening parting, a receding hairline or a thin crown.
- There are bald patches, scalp pain, redness, scaling or burning.
- Eyebrows, eyelashes or body hair are also thinning, or you feel unusually tired or cold.
Mounjaro hair loss treatment cost in Gurgaon
Many people need only a consultation, a few targeted tests and a follow-up. If pattern hair loss is found and procedures such as PRP or GFC are recommended, the cost depends on the number of sessions, and you receive a written quote before anything is booked.
When not to buy a hair package
Shedding after rapid weight loss usually recovers with nutrition and time. A procedure package bought in the middle of it can look as if it worked when the hair was going to return anyway. Paying for PRP or GFC makes sense when pattern thinning has been confirmed, not as a reflex to heavy shedding.
Hair loss on weight-loss medicines, assessed by a dermatologist
Hair fall on a GLP-1 medicine sits between two specialities. The prescribing doctor manages the dose and the weight; a dermatologist works out what is happening at the scalp. Dr. Tanya Kochhar, a dermatologist and trichologist, separates temporary shedding from pattern hair loss under trichoscopy, orders only the tests that your history points to, and can write to your prescribing doctor so that any change to the medicine is decided together rather than in a panic.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.
Mounjaro and Ozempic hair loss FAQs
Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?
Hair loss is a reported side effect of tirzepatide, the medicine in Mounjaro. In the trials behind its US weight-loss label (Zepbound), hair loss was reported in 4 to 5% of people against 1% on placebo, and the label links it to weight reduction. Most cases are temporary shedding called telogen effluvium.
Is Ozempic or semaglutide hair loss permanent?
Usually not. Shedding after rapid weight loss is telogen effluvium, in which the follicles stay alive and regrow hair once the trigger eases, typically within about six months. Hair loss can seem permanent when it has unmasked pattern hair loss, which needs its own treatment.
Should I stop Mounjaro if my hair is falling out?
Not on your own. Speak to the doctor who prescribed it, who may slow the dose increase or review your weight-loss pace. Meanwhile a dermatologist can confirm the cause, check for iron or protein deficiency and start treatment if needed, often without any change to the medicine.
When does hair loss start on weight-loss injections?
Usually two to four months after starting, once weight is falling quickly. The delay is because hairs pushed into the resting phase take a few months to shed. Hair fall in the first few weeks of treatment is more likely to have another cause and is worth checking.
Why do women get more hair loss on GLP-1 medicines?
In the Wegovy and Zepbound trials, hair loss was reported far more often in women than men, for example 7.1% of women against 0.5% of men on Zepbound. Lower iron stores, female pattern hair loss and longer hair that makes shedding more visible may all contribute.
Will biotin stop hair loss on Ozempic?
There is little evidence that biotin helps hair loss in people who are not deficient, and true biotin deficiency is uncommon. High-dose biotin can interfere with some blood tests, including thyroid tests. Protein, iron and other proven gaps are the priorities.
Is PRP useful for hair loss after weight loss?
PRP is not usually needed for pure telogen effluvium, which recovers on its own once the trigger is corrected. It can help when the shedding has revealed male or female pattern hair loss, alongside medical treatment. A trichoscopy examination shows which you have before you spend on sessions.
