Nail fungus treatment in Gurgaon

Thick, discoloured or crumbling nails are often fungal, but not always. Dr. Tanya Kochhar confirms the diagnosis before starting treatment, then plans a course that fits how slowly nails grow and how to keep the infection from coming back.

Quick answer

How is nail fungus treated in Gurgaon?

Nail fungus is treated with antifungal tablets, topical lacquers or both, once the diagnosis is confirmed, because psoriasis and injury can look similar. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar examines the nails with dermoscopy and sends a nail clipping where needed. A healthy fingernail takes about 6 months to grow out, and a toenail 12 to 18 months.

Understanding nail fungus

What is onychomycosis?

Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nail, most often caused by dermatophytes, the same fungi behind athlete's foot and ringworm. Yeasts and moulds are less common causes. Toenails are affected far more often than fingernails.

The infection usually starts at the tip or side of the nail and spreads slowly towards the base. The nail becomes discoloured, thickened and crumbly, and may lift away from the skin beneath. It rarely goes away on its own, and untreated nails can become painful in shoes and act as a reservoir that spreads fungus to the feet, groin and other nails.

Not every thick or discoloured nail is fungal. Nail psoriasis, repeated injury from shoes or sport, and some other nail disorders look very similar and need different treatment.

Why it happens

What makes nail fungus more likely

Fungi thrive in warm, damp places, which is why heat, humidity and closed shoes play such a large part.

Sweat and footwear

Closed shoes worn for long hours in a hot, humid climate keep the feet damp, creating ideal conditions for fungus to grow.

Athlete's foot

Untreated fungal infection of the skin between the toes or on the soles often spreads into the nails.

Nail injury

Damage from tight shoes, sport or aggressive pedicures lets fungus enter the nail more easily.

Diabetes and circulation

Diabetes, poor circulation and reduced immunity make infection more likely, slower to clear and more important to treat.

Shared spaces

Gyms, pool areas, shared bathrooms and shared nail tools can spread fungus between people.

Age

Nails grow more slowly and thicken with age, so infection becomes more common and harder to clear.

At Le Dermaire

How nail fungus is treated

Confirm, treat, monitor, then protect the new nail.

1

Examination

Dr. Tanya examines the nails, skin of the feet and hands, and other areas that psoriasis can affect, using dermoscopy to look at the nail in detail.

2

Confirming the diagnosis

Where the picture is unclear, or before a long course of tablets, a nail clipping is sent for a KOH test and fungal culture to confirm the infection and identify the organism.

3

Treatment plan

Oral antifungals, topical treatment or both, chosen for how many nails are involved, your other medicines and your health. Thickened nails may be trimmed down to help treatment penetrate.

4

Follow-up

Reviews every few weeks to months check progress, and blood tests where the medicine requires them. Treatment continues until healthy nail is growing through.

Treatment options

Nail fungus treatment options explained

Oral antifungal tablets are the most effective treatment when several nails are affected or the infection reaches towards the base of the nail. Courses are usually given for around three months for toenails and shorter for fingernails, sometimes in pulses. They are prescribed only after checking your other medicines and liver health, since interactions and side effects are possible.

Topical antifungal lacquers and solutions suit mild infection limited to the tip of one or a few nails, or are used alongside tablets. They need to be applied daily for many months, and work better when the nail is kept trimmed and thinned.

Treating the skin matters too. Athlete's foot or fungal infection elsewhere on the body is treated at the same time, otherwise it simply reinfects the nail. Home remedies and over-the-counter creams applied to the nail surface rarely reach the infection underneath.

Why a test can be worth it

Oral antifungals are taken for months and need monitoring. Taking them for a nail that turns out to be psoriasis or injury costs time and money and brings side effects for no benefit. Confirming the diagnosis first, where there is doubt, is the more economical route.

Special care

Nail fungus and diabetes

For people with diabetes, nail fungus is more than a cosmetic problem. Thick, sharp nails can cut the surrounding skin, and cracked skin from athlete's foot opens a route for bacterial infection. With reduced sensation in the feet, these injuries can go unnoticed.

Treatment is planned around your blood sugar control and other medicines, and foot checks are part of every visit. Good sugar control also helps the infection clear.

If you have diabetes and notice redness, swelling, pain, pus or a wound around a nail, seek medical care promptly rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

Keeping it away

Preventing nail fungus from coming back

Helps

  • Drying the feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, after every wash.
  • Cotton socks changed daily, and breathable shoes or sandals when possible.
  • Rotating shoes so each pair dries out, and using antifungal powder if advised.
  • Keeping nails short and straight, with your own clippers.

Avoid

  • Walking barefoot in gyms, pool areas and shared bathrooms.
  • Sharing towels, socks, shoes or nail tools.
  • Covering an affected nail with nail polish or acrylics.
  • Stopping treatment when the nail starts to look better, before the course ends.

Why a dermatologist

Nail problems assessed by a dermatologist

Nails are part of the skin, and nail disorders are a core part of dermatology. A dermatologist can tell fungal infection apart from nail psoriasis, lichen planus, trauma and rarer conditions such as a pigmented band that needs checking, arrange the right laboratory confirmation, and prescribe and monitor oral antifungals safely alongside your other medicines.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Nail fungus FAQs

How do I know if my nail problem is fungal?

Fungal nails are usually yellow or white, thickened and crumbly, often starting at the tip. But nail psoriasis, injury from shoes and other conditions can look almost identical. A dermatologist examines the nail with dermoscopy and, where needed, sends a nail clipping for a KOH test and culture to confirm the infection before a long course of treatment.

Can nail fungus be cured completely?

Yes, nail fungus can often be cleared with the right treatment, especially when started early and taken for the full course. However, recurrence is common, particularly on toenails, so good foot hygiene and footwear habits afterwards are important. Some older or heavily damaged nails may not return to a completely normal appearance.

How much does nail fungus treatment cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the number of nails affected, whether a laboratory test is needed and the medicines prescribed. Any test or in-clinic procedure is quoted in writing after the consultation. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.

How long does nail fungus treatment take?

Tablets are usually taken for a few months, but the nail takes much longer to look normal because healthy nail has to grow out. Fingernails take around six months, and toenails typically twelve to eighteen months. The infection may be cleared well before the nail looks fully clear.

Are oral antifungal tablets safe?

For most healthy adults, yes, when prescribed and monitored by a doctor. They can interact with other medicines and occasionally affect the liver, so your medical history and current medicines are reviewed first, and blood tests are advised where appropriate. They are generally avoided in pregnancy and in some liver conditions.

Will a cream from the pharmacy clear nail fungus?

Usually not. Skin creams do not penetrate the hard nail plate to reach the infection underneath. Medicated nail lacquers can help mild cases limited to the tip of a nail, but extensive infection generally needs oral treatment. Starting the right treatment early prevents the infection from spreading to other nails.

Is nail fungus dangerous for people with diabetes?

It needs more attention. Thick nails and cracked skin from athlete's foot can let bacteria in, and reduced sensation means injuries may go unnoticed. Treatment is planned around blood sugar control and other medicines. Any redness, swelling, pain or discharge around a nail should be seen promptly.
