Laser hair removal in Gurgaon

Long-term reduction of unwanted hair, planned and supervised by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar. Settings are chosen for Indian skin, and every course starts with a consultation and a patch test.

Quick answer

Is laser hair removal permanent?

Laser hair removal gives a long-term reduction rather than a guaranteed permanent removal of every hair. Most areas need six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart, and occasional maintenance sessions afterwards. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar plans and supervises every course, starting with a consultation and a patch test.

What it does

Removal or reduction?

Laser light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair and converted to heat, which disables the follicle that produced it. Only follicles in their active growth phase respond, which is why treatment is spread across several sessions.

“Laser hair removal” is the common name, but the accurate medical term is laser hair reduction. A completed course gives a large, long-lasting reduction in hair, and what grows back is usually finer and lighter. It does not guarantee that every hair is gone forever, and anyone promising that is overselling.

Where excess hair is driven by hormones, as with PCOS, new follicles can keep being activated. The underlying cause is assessed at consultation, and maintenance sessions are planned for from the start.

Skin type matters

Laser hair removal for Indian skin

Most skin in India falls between Fitzpatrick types III and V. Darker skin holds more melanin, the same pigment the laser is aiming for in the hair, so the skin itself can absorb energy meant for the follicle. Set too aggressively, that is what causes burns and dark patches.

For medium to darker skin, wavelengths that the skin absorbs less, such as the long-pulsed Nd:YAG and diode lasers, are generally preferred, with cooling and conservative starting settings. A patch test on a small area comes before the first full session, and settings are adjusted from how your skin responds.

A tan changes the picture too. Recently tanned skin is treated more cautiously or the session is postponed, which is worth planning around after a holiday.

Side by side

Laser hair removal or waxing and threading?

Waxing, threading and shaving remove hair for days or weeks. Laser reduces the follicles that make it, so the comparison is really short-term removal against long-term reduction.

Laser hair reductionWaxing and threading
How it worksLaser heat disables actively growing follicles.Pulls hair out from the root; the follicle regrows it.
How long results lastLong-term reduction after a course, with occasional maintenance.About 2 to 6 weeks, then repeat.
Number of visitsTypically 6 to 8 sessions, 4 to 8 weeks apart, then top-ups.Every few weeks, indefinitely.
Ingrown hairs and bumpsUsually improve as hair thins.Common, especially on the bikini line, beard and legs.
Skin darkeningLower risk once the course is done; needs correct settings for Indian skin.Repeated waxing and friction can darken underarms and bikini skin.
PainA brief snap with cooling; lessens as hair thins.Sharp pull with each strip or thread.
Main risksBurns or pigment change if settings are wrong for the skin.Burns from hot wax, folliculitis, cuts and irritation.
Cost over timeHigher upfront, then occasional top-ups.Low per visit, but ongoing for years.

During a laser course, shaving is the only removal method to use between sessions, because laser needs the hair root in place to work.

Laser hair removal for men

Men's laser hair removal

Men most often ask about the back, shoulders and chest, the beard line and neck, and the arms. Body hair in men is usually dense and coarse, which responds well, though larger areas take longer per session and the back and chest can need extra sessions.

Beard shaping is a separate decision. Laser is permanent enough that a beard line set at 25 may not suit you at 40, so the outline is agreed carefully and set slightly conservatively. Treating the neck below the beard is one of the most useful areas for men who get razor bumps and ingrown hairs, a condition called pseudofolliculitis barbae, which is common with curly beard hair.

Men's facial hair is strongly driven by hormones, so the beard area typically needs more sessions than body areas and occasional maintenance. Settings are matched to skin type, and the same patch test and aftercare apply.

Hormonal hair growth

Laser hair removal for PCOS and facial hair

Excess coarse hair on the chin, jawline, upper lip, neck, chest or abdomen in women is called hirsutism, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is its most common cause. Higher androgen levels keep converting fine, light hair into coarse, dark hair, and keep activating new follicles over time.

Laser works well on this coarse, dark hair, but the hormones driving it are still active. That means more sessions than usual, often eight or more for the face, and maintenance sessions every few months for as long as the hormonal drive continues. Results are better and last longer when the hormonal side is treated too, which may involve your gynaecologist or physician alongside the laser plan.

At consultation, Dr. Tanya asks about periods, weight changes, acne and scalp hair thinning, and may suggest hormone tests if PCOS has not already been diagnosed. Sudden, rapidly worsening hair growth, a deepening voice or other new changes are investigated before laser is started.

Facial hair with irregular periods, acne or thinning scalp hair is worth mentioning at consultation even if you have not been diagnosed with PCOS.

Where it is used

Areas treated

Laser hair reduction is offered for women and men. Small areas take minutes; larger areas are often combined into one visit.

Face

Upper lip, chin, jawline, sides of the face and forehead. Facial hair in women is checked for a hormonal cause before treatment.

Underarms & bikini

Among the most requested areas, and among the quickest to respond because the hair is coarse and dark.

Arms & legs

Full or half arms and legs, hands and feet. Often booked together as a full-body plan.

For men

Beard line and neck shaping, including for ingrown hairs and razor bumps, plus chest, back and shoulders.

Back, chest & shoulders

Large areas with coarse hair that respond well, usually taking longer per session. Often requested by men alongside beard shaping.

Full body

Several areas combined into one plan, with sessions scheduled so that each area is treated at its own best interval.

How many sessions

How many laser hair removal sessions each area needs

Typical course by area

  • Underarms and bikini line: often 6 to 8 sessions; coarse, dark hair responds well.
  • Arms and legs: usually 6 to 8 sessions, 6 to 8 weeks apart.
  • Back, chest and shoulders: 6 to 8 sessions, sometimes more for dense hair.
  • Face in women: often 8 or more, with regular maintenance, especially with hormonal hair.
  • Beard line and neck in men: often more than 8, as beard hair is dense and hormonally driven.

What changes the number

  • Hair colour and thickness: dark, coarse hair responds fastest; fine or light hair slowest.
  • Skin type: darker skin is treated at safer settings, which can mean an extra session or two.
  • Hormones: PCOS, thyroid problems and some medicines keep activating new follicles.
  • Keeping to the interval: missed or delayed sessions let follicles drift out of step.
  • Waxing or plucking between sessions, which removes the hair the laser needs to target.

How treatment works

Four stages, and nothing is started on the day unless you want it to be.

1

Consultation

Dr. Tanya examines your skin and hair, asks about medication and medical history, and looks for signs of a hormonal cause such as PCOS. You get a realistic plan and a quote.

2

Patch test

A small test area is treated and checked, so the settings for your full sessions are based on how your skin actually responded.

3

Treatment sessions

The area is shaved, cleaned and cooled. Sessions are spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, and settings are reviewed as the hair thins and lightens.

4

Maintenance

Once the course is complete, an occasional top-up session keeps any regrowth under control, more often where hormones play a part.

Pricing

Laser hair removal cost in Gurgaon

The laser hair removal cost depends on the size of the area, the number of sessions your hair and skin need, whether several areas are combined, and whether hormones mean maintenance will be needed. You receive a written quote for the course after the consultation and patch test, before any treatment is booked.

Why the cheapest session can cost more

Low-cost packages often run at settings too weak to disable the follicle, so hair returns and more sessions are sold. Settings that are too strong for the skin type cause burns and pigmentation that take months to treat. The price that matters is the cost of a course that works safely.

Safety

Is laser hair removal safe?

In trained hands and at settings matched to the skin, laser hair reduction is a well-established, low-risk treatment. Mild redness and small raised bumps around the follicles are expected and settle within hours.

Less common side effects include blistering, crusting, and darkening or lightening of the treated skin, which are more likely on darker or tanned skin. Rarely, laser on the face or neck can stimulate finer hair to grow thicker nearby. These risks are discussed at consultation and are the main reason the treatment should be supervised by a dermatologist.

Treatment is usually postponed during pregnancy, over active infection or broken skin, and over a mole that has not been examined. Tell the clinic about any medication, including isotretinoin and anything that makes the skin sensitive to light.

Preparation and aftercare

Before and after your session

Before

  • Shave the area the day before. Do not wax, thread or pluck for 4 to 6 weeks beforehand.
  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning and self-tanning products for two weeks.
  • Arrive with clean skin: no makeup, deodorant or creams on the area.
  • Bring a list of your current medicines and supplements.

After

  • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen on treated areas, every day of the course.
  • Skip hot showers, saunas, swimming and heavy workouts for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Shaving between sessions is fine. Waxing and plucking are not.
  • Treated hairs shed over one to three weeks. That is expected, not regrowth.

Why a dermatologist

Laser treatment led by a skin specialist

Unwanted hair is sometimes a symptom rather than just a cosmetic concern. A dermatologist can recognise when it points to PCOS or another hormonal cause, can tell a harmless mole from one that should not be lasered, and can treat a reaction properly if one occurs.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Laser hair removal FAQs

Is laser hair removal permanent?

It gives a long-term reduction rather than a guaranteed permanent removal of every hair. After a full course most people see a large, lasting reduction, and the hair that remains is usually finer and lighter. Occasional maintenance sessions keep it that way, particularly where hormones are involved.

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?

Most areas need six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart. Coarse dark hair on fair to medium skin tends to respond fastest. Hormonally driven hair, such as facial hair with PCOS, usually needs more sessions and regular maintenance.

How much does laser hair removal cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the area treated and the number of sessions, and is quoted in writing after the consultation and patch test. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.

Is laser hair removal safe for Indian or dark skin?

Yes, when the laser type and settings are matched to the skin. Darker skin carries a higher risk of burns and pigment changes, so wavelengths such as long-pulsed Nd:YAG and diode, conservative settings and a patch test are used. This is one of the main reasons to have the treatment supervised by a dermatologist.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe a brief snap, like a rubber band against the skin. Contact cooling makes it comfortable for most areas. Sensitive areas such as the upper lip and bikini line can feel sharper, and the sensation lessens as the hair thins over the course.

Can laser hair removal treat facial hair caused by PCOS?

Laser can reduce hair caused by PCOS, but because hormones keep stimulating new follicles, results are slower and maintenance is needed. Dr. Tanya Kochhar assesses the hormonal picture at consultation and, where appropriate, advises on medical treatment alongside the laser for a better and longer-lasting result.

Does laser work on grey, white or blonde hair?

Not well. Laser targets the pigment in the hair, so grey, white, blonde and fine red hair absorb too little energy to be affected. These are discussed at consultation so that you know what to expect before paying for a course.

Is laser hair removal good for men?

Yes. Men commonly treat the back, shoulders, chest, arms and the neck below the beard, and laser is especially helpful for razor bumps and ingrown beard hairs. Beard shaping is planned conservatively because the result is long-lasting. The beard area usually needs more sessions than body areas because the hair is hormonally driven.

Can I wax or thread between laser sessions?

No. Waxing, threading and plucking remove the hair from the root, and laser needs the root in place to reach the follicle. Shaving or trimming between sessions is fine. Stop waxing and threading four to six weeks before your first session and avoid them for the whole course.

Does laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs?

Usually, yes. As the hair becomes finer and sparser, there are fewer hairs to curl back into the skin, so ingrown hairs, razor bumps and the dark marks they leave tend to improve. This makes laser useful for the beard area in men and the bikini line in women.
