Skin and hair diagnostics in Gurgaon
Magnified examination of the skin, scalp and nails, and biopsy where needed, so that Dr. Tanya Kochhar can confirm what a condition is before recommending how to treat it.
How do dermatologists diagnose skin, hair and nail conditions in Gurgaon?
Dermatologists in Gurgaon use dermoscopy, a painless magnified examination of the skin and nails, trichoscopy for the scalp and hair, and a skin biopsy where needed. At Le Dermaire, dermoscopy or trichoscopy is included in the ₹1,800 consultation when needed. A biopsy takes 15 to 30 minutes under local anaesthetic, with results in about 1 to 2 weeks.
Skin and hair diagnostics, in short
Most of these examinations happen within a normal consultation and take only minutes.
Why diagnosis comes before treatment
Skin conditions that look similar to the naked eye often look quite different under magnification. Dermoscopy shows pigment networks, blood vessel patterns and scale that help separate a harmless mole from one that needs attention, psoriasis from eczema, or a fungal infection from something else entirely. Trichoscopy does the same for the scalp and hair.
Getting the diagnosis right at the start avoids months of treatment aimed at the wrong condition, reduces unnecessary procedures, and gives a baseline to compare against at later visits. This is why dermoscopy and trichoscopy are part of the standard consultation at Le Dermaire where they are needed, rather than an extra you have to ask for.
When examination alone cannot settle the question, a small skin biopsy gives a definite answer from a pathologist.
See a dermatologist promptly for a mole or spot that is new after the age of 30, changing in size, shape or colour, bleeding without injury, or a sore that has not healed in several weeks.
Diagnostic examinations
Each is chosen according to the question that needs answering.
Dermoscopy
A dermatoscope is a handheld magnifier with polarised light that lets the doctor see structures below the skin surface that are invisible to the naked eye. It is used to assess moles and pigmented spots, to help diagnose rashes, scalp and nail disease, and to identify scabies mites, warts and other infections. It is painless, takes a few minutes and needs no preparation. Images may be recorded so a spot can be compared at future visits.
Trichoscopy
Dermoscopy applied to the scalp and hair. It shows the size and variation of hair shafts, the state of the follicle openings, and signs of inflammation, scale or scarring. Trichoscopy helps distinguish pattern hair loss from diffuse shedding, alopecia areata, scalp infections and scarring alopecia, and gives a record against which treatment response can be measured. Come with hair washed a day or two before and without oils, gels or sprays.
Skin biopsy
A small sample of skin is removed under local anaesthetic, either with a round punch a few millimetres wide or by shaving a raised lesion, and sent for histopathology. It is used when the diagnosis is uncertain, a condition is not responding as expected, scarring hair loss is suspected, or a lesion needs to be checked for anything serious. A punch biopsy usually needs one or two stitches, removed after about a week. Results take around one to two weeks.
Nail examination
The nails, surrounding skin and nail folds are examined with the naked eye and under dermoscopy, looking at colour, shape, surface, thickness and the small blood vessels of the nail fold. Nail changes can come from fungal infection, psoriasis, eczema, injury or, less often, internal disease, and some pigmented streaks need careful assessment. Where fungal infection is suspected, a nail clipping may be taken for testing before long treatment is started.

Biopsy if needed
If a sample is needed, the reason, procedure and cost are explained, and it can often be done at the same visit or booked soon after.

Dermoscopy and trichoscopy cost in Gurgaon
Dermoscopy and trichoscopy are included in the consultation where they are needed. A biopsy is a separate procedure and is quoted before it is done, including the outside laboratory charge.
Why it is included
Magnified examination is part of making a proper diagnosis, not an optional add-on. Including it in the consultation means it is used whenever it would help, without you having to decide whether it is worth paying extra.
Diagnosis by a dermatologist
Dermoscopy and trichoscopy are only as useful as the person interpreting them. Dr. Tanya uses them routinely in her dermatology and trichology practice, and knows which patterns are reassuring, which need watching, and which call for a biopsy.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). Skin and hair diagnostics FAQs
What is the difference between dermoscopy and trichoscopy?
They use the same instrument. Dermoscopy is the general term for magnified examination of the skin, moles and nails. Trichoscopy is dermoscopy of the scalp and hair, looking at hair shafts, follicle openings and signs of inflammation or scarring. Both are painless, quick and done during a normal consultation.
How much does dermoscopy or trichoscopy cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire, dermoscopy and trichoscopy are included in the Rs 1,800 consultation fee whenever they are needed to reach a diagnosis. A skin biopsy is a separate procedure, and its cost, including the outside laboratory charge, is explained and quoted before it is done.
Is a skin biopsy painful?
The local anaesthetic injection stings for a few seconds, after which the area is numb and the biopsy itself should not hurt. Mild soreness afterwards is usual and eased by simple painkillers. A punch biopsy leaves a small scar, which is why sites are chosen carefully and cosmetically sensitive areas are avoided where possible.
Does a biopsy mean the doctor suspects cancer?
Not usually. Most biopsies are done to confirm the type of rash, hair loss or inflammatory condition so the right treatment can be chosen. A biopsy is also used to check a changing mole or spot, and in that case it is the safest way to be certain. The reason for any biopsy is explained before it is done.
Do I need to prepare for trichoscopy?
Wash your hair a day or two before, and avoid oils, gels, sprays and hair colour immediately before the visit, as they can hide scale and change how the scalp looks. If you are concerned about increased shedding, avoid washing on the day itself so the doctor can see a typical amount of loose hair.
Can dermoscopy tell if a mole is harmless?
Dermoscopy greatly improves the accuracy of judging a mole compared with the naked eye, and many moles can be confidently reassured. Where a mole shows worrying features, it is either photographed and monitored for change or removed for examination under the microscope, which gives the final answer.
