Dark circles treatment in Gurgaon

Dark circles have several different causes, and each needs a different treatment. Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar works out whether yours come from pigment, hollowing, thin skin or a mix, then recommends what is likely to help and what is not.

Quick answer

How are dark circles treated in Gurgaon?

Dark circles are treated according to their cause, whether pigment, hollowing, thin skin or a mix. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar identifies the cause first. Pigment responds to creams, peels or laser over 8 to 12 weeks, while hollowing is softened with filler. Results are maintained with sun protection and repeat treatment as they fade.

Understanding dark circles

Why the under-eye area looks dark

The skin under the eyes is among the thinnest on the body, so anything beneath or within it shows through easily. Dark circles can be brown from excess pigment, bluish or purple from blood vessels showing through thin skin, or simply shadowed where the area has become hollow.

In Indian skin, periorbital hyperpigmentation, where the skin itself holds more melanin, is especially common and often runs in families. Many people also have a tear trough shadow on top of it, which is why a single cream or treatment rarely solves the whole problem.

A simple test: gently stretch the under-eye skin. If the darkness stays, it is likely pigment. If it lightens or looks bluer, vessels or thin skin play a part. If it changes with overhead light, hollowing is casting a shadow.

What causes them

The main causes of dark circles

Most people have more than one cause. Treatment works best when each is addressed.

Pigmentation

Brown darkening of the skin itself, often genetic and common in Indian skin. It can extend onto the upper lids and is worsened by sun and rubbing.

Hollowing & tear trough

Loss of fat and support under the eye with age, or an inherited deep groove, casts a shadow that no cream can lighten.

Thin skin & visible vessels

When the skin is thin, the blood vessels and muscle underneath show through as a bluish or purple tint, often worse when tired.

Allergy & rubbing

Allergic rhinitis, eczema and constant eye rubbing inflame the skin and leave pigment behind. Treating the allergy is part of treating the circles.

Puffiness

Fluid retention or fat pads below the eye can cast a shadow beneath them. Sleep, salt and allergies affect how puffy the area looks.

Health & habits

Poor sleep, dehydration and smoking can make circles look worse. Rarely, thyroid problems or anaemia contribute and are checked if suspected.

At Le Dermaire

How dark circles are treated

The plan follows the cause, so that you do not pay for treatments that cannot help your type.

1

Assessment

Dr. Tanya examines the area in different lights, uses dermoscopy where useful, and asks about allergies, eye rubbing, sleep and products you use.

2

A matched plan

Pigment is treated with topicals and sometimes peels or laser. Hollowing is treated with volume. Allergy or eczema is treated first where it is driving the darkness.

3

Treatment

Creams are started at home; any in-clinic procedure is scheduled after the skin is prepared and a written quote has been agreed.

4

Review

Progress is checked after a few weeks and the plan adjusted, with maintenance advice for keeping the result.

Matching treatment to cause

For pigmentation, prescription creams made for the delicate eye area, containing agents such as azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C or a gentle retinoid, are the first step, with daily sunscreen and sunglasses. Superficial chemical peels and Q-switched or pico laser can help stubborn periorbital pigmentation, used at gentle settings because the skin here is thin and prone to darkening if irritated.

For hollowing and tear trough shadows, a small amount of hyaluronic acid under-eye filler placed carefully can soften the groove so it casts less shadow. It is not suitable for everyone, particularly where there are large fat pads or significant puffiness, and this is assessed before it is offered.

For thin skin and fine crêpiness, under-eye rejuvenation with PRP or skin boosters aims to improve skin quality and hydration over a course of sessions. Results are gradual and modest, and they work best as part of a wider plan rather than on their own.

Why the diagnosis saves money

Eye creams cannot fill a hollow, and filler does nothing for pigment. Many people spend on products or procedures aimed at the wrong cause. Knowing what is actually behind your dark circles means you only pay for treatment that can make a difference.

Safety

Is dark circles treatment safe?

Topical treatment is low-risk, though the eye area irritates easily, so products are introduced slowly. Peels and laser around the eyes carry a risk of temporary darkening or lightening in Indian skin, which is why settings are conservative and eye protection is used.

Under-eye filler is a precise, medical procedure. Bruising and swelling are common for a few days, and lumps or a bluish tinge can occur if filler is placed too superficially. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel, which is a medical emergency. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved if needed, and the procedure should only be done by a trained doctor.

Avoid bleaching creams, steroid creams and home remedies such as lemon or potato juice on the under-eye skin. They can irritate the thin skin and leave it darker than before.

Everyday care

What helps and what does not

Helps

  • Sunscreen up to the lower lids and sunglasses outdoors.
  • Treating hay fever, allergic rhinitis or eczema around the eyes.
  • Keeping hands away from the eyes and not rubbing them.
  • Regular sleep and sleeping slightly propped up if you wake puffy.

Does not help much

  • Expensive eye creams for hollowing or tear trough shadows.
  • Cucumber slices, tea bags and cold spoons, beyond a brief reduction in puffiness.
  • Concealer-only routines for inflamed or itchy under-eye skin.
  • More sleep alone, for pigment-type dark circles that run in the family.

Why a dermatologist

Dark circles assessed by a skin specialist

Dark circles sit where pigment, allergy, skin thinning and facial ageing overlap. A dermatologist can tell which of these is responsible, treat an underlying allergy or eczema, choose peels and laser settings that are safe on thin, darker skin, and judge whether you are a suitable candidate for under-eye filler before anything is injected.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Dark circles treatment FAQs

Can dark circles be removed permanently?

Dark circles can usually be improved, but permanent removal cannot be promised. Pigment can lighten well with treatment yet return with sun or rubbing, filler lasts many months rather than forever, and ageing continues. Most people keep their results with sun protection, avoiding rubbing, and occasional maintenance treatment.

What is the best treatment for dark circles?

There is no single treatment that suits everyone, because dark circles have different causes. Pigment responds to creams, peels or laser. Hollowing and tear trough shadow respond to filler. Thin skin may improve with PRP or skin boosters. A dermatologist identifies the cause first, and many people need a combination.

How much does dark circles treatment cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the cause and the treatment chosen, whether creams, peels, laser, filler or under-eye rejuvenation. Any procedure is quoted in writing after the consultation, before booking. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800, and nothing is charged that has not been quoted to you first.

Will sleeping more get rid of my dark circles?

Better sleep can reduce puffiness and a tired look, but it rarely clears dark circles caused by pigmentation or hollowing. Periorbital pigmentation is often genetic and common in Indian skin, and a tear trough is a structural shadow. These usually need medical treatment in addition to good habits.

Is under-eye filler safe?

Under-eye filler is generally safe when done by a trained doctor using hyaluronic acid filler and careful technique. Bruising and swelling for a few days are common. Lumps, a bluish tinge, or rarely a blocked blood vessel can occur. Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with an enzyme if a problem arises.

How long does under-eye filler last?

Under-eye filler often lasts around 9 to 12 months, and sometimes longer, because there is little movement in the area. How long it lasts depends on the product, the amount used and your own metabolism. Many people have a smaller top-up once the effect begins to fade.

Are dark circles a sign of a health problem?

Usually not. Most dark circles are due to genetics, pigment, ageing or allergy. Occasionally they are linked to anaemia, thyroid problems, eczema or allergic conditions, especially if they appear suddenly or come with other symptoms. Dr. Tanya asks about these and suggests tests if they seem relevant.
