Hair fall after dengue treatment in Gurgaon

Hair fall after dengue treatment usually means confirming that the shedding is temporary, correcting what the illness left behind, such as low iron or protein, and checking that it has not exposed pattern thinning. Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar examines the scalp under trichoscopy and orders only the tests your history points to, so you do not spend months on oils or procedure packages that shedding of this kind does not need.

Quick answer

Why does hair fall after dengue, and how is it treated?

Hair fall after dengue is usually telogen effluvium: the fever and illness push many hairs into their resting phase at once, and they shed together weeks to a few months later. It is non-scarring and normally settles within six to nine months. Treatment means confirming the diagnosis, correcting deficiencies such as low iron, and ruling out pattern hair loss or alopecia areata that needs its own care.

Understanding it

Why does hair fall after dengue?

Every hair follicle cycles between a long growing phase, a short transition and a resting phase, after which the hair sheds and a new one starts. At any time most scalp hairs are growing. A major physical stress, such as several days of high fever, dehydration, poor appetite and the body's fight against the virus, can switch a large share of follicles into the resting phase together. Those hairs then shed at the same time, a pattern dermatologists call telogen effluvium. DermNet, the dermatology reference run by New Zealand dermatologists, places this shedding typically two to four months after the trigger.

Dengue may also act on the follicle more directly. A 2018 laboratory study by Wei and colleagues in Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology showed that the dengue virus can infect human dermal papilla cells, the cells at the base of the follicle that control hair growth. The authors had noted an unusually high rate of scalp hair shedding after Taiwan's 2014 to 2015 dengue epidemics, sometimes within the first month. This may explain why some people notice hair fall earlier after dengue than after other fevers. Importantly, the shedding they described was without scarring or permanent loss.

The same process follows typhoid, malaria, chikungunya, COVID, surgery, childbirth and crash dieting. Delhi NCR's dengue season runs from the monsoon into early winter, so many people in Gurgaon notice the shedding between November and February, often long after they have stopped connecting it to the fever.

A hair that falls with a small white bulb at its root is a resting hair, not a sign that the follicle has died. In telogen effluvium the follicle keeps working and starts a new hair, which is why this kind of hair fall is expected to recover.

What happens when

Hair loss after dengue: how long does it last?

A typical course, counted from the fever. Knowing where you are on it saves a lot of worry, and money.

1

Weeks 0 to 4: the illness

Fever, body ache and low platelets take all the attention. Most follicles have already received the signal to rest, but nothing shows yet, although a few people notice early shedding within the first month.

2

Months 1 to 3: shedding begins

Hair comes out by the handful when washing or combing, from all over the scalp. The parting may look wider and the ponytail thinner. This is the stage when most people panic and start buying products.

3

Months 3 to 6: shedding slows

The daily count falls back towards normal. Short, fine new hairs appear along the hairline and parting, a good sign that the cycle has reset.

4

Months 6 to 12: density returns

Regrowth fills in gradually, at roughly a centimetre a month. Long hair takes the longest to look full again, because the new hairs start short.

Post-dengue shedding or pattern hair loss?

Dengue can unmask pattern thinning that was already starting, and the two need very different plans. These are the differences a dermatologist looks for.

Post-dengue shedding (telogen effluvium)Pattern hair loss
How it startsSuddenly, weeks to a few months after the fever.Slowly, over months or years, with no clear trigger.
WhereAll over the scalp, often more noticeable at the temples.Crown and temples in men; a widening central parting in women.
What you seeMany full-length hairs with white bulbs falling out.Fewer hairs shed, but the remaining hairs become finer and shorter.
Under trichoscopyHairs of fairly even thickness, with many short regrowing hairs.Hairs of varying thickness (miniaturisation), mostly at the crown or front.
CourseSettles on its own over six to nine months.Continues to progress unless treated.
TreatmentCorrect deficiencies, gentle care, time. Medicines only if prolonged.Ongoing medical treatment, with PRP or GFC in selected cases.

Both can happen at once. If shedding stops but the parting or crown still looks thin after six months, pattern thinning is likely and is worth treating early. Female and male pattern hair loss each have their own guide, linked below.

Hair fall after dengue treatment: what actually helps

The plan is built around what is actually happening on your scalp, not a fixed package.

1

History

When you had dengue, how ill you were, any hospital stay, weight lost, what you are eating now, periods and pregnancy, and every medicine and supplement you have started since.

2

Scalp examination

Dr. Tanya looks at the pattern of loss, does a gentle pull test and examines the scalp under trichoscopy to confirm shedding and look for miniaturisation, patches or scalp inflammation.

3

Targeted tests

Blood tests are added only where the history or examination suggests a deficiency or another cause, rather than a long fixed panel.

4

Plan and review

Deficiencies are corrected, hair care is adjusted and progress is checked at a review. Medicines are added only if shedding is prolonged or pattern thinning has been unmasked.

Blood tests

Which blood tests matter for hair fall after fever?

Many people arrive with a long report of tests that did not change anything. The ones that commonly matter after dengue are fewer. Ferritin and a blood count show iron stores, which are often low after a long illness, poor appetite or heavy periods, and low iron can keep shedding going after the fever's effect has passed. Thyroid function is checked when shedding is prolonged or there are other symptoms, because both an underactive and an overactive thyroid cause diffuse hair fall. Vitamin B12 and vitamin D are checked when diet, symptoms or the duration of shedding suggest them.

If you have been taking biotin or a hair supplement containing it, mention it before any blood test. High-dose biotin can interfere with some laboratory tests, including thyroid tests, and give misleading results. It is usually paused for a few days beforehand on your doctor's advice.

Platelet counts and liver tests from the dengue itself do not need repeating for the hair, unless your physician has asked for them for other reasons.

Treatment options

Treatment options explained

Time and reassurance are the main treatment in pure post-dengue shedding. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that it is normal to shed 50 to 100 hairs a day, and that excess shedding after a fever or illness usually stops within six to nine months as the body readjusts. Hairs that have already entered the resting phase will still fall whatever is applied, so no product can stop shedding overnight.

Nutrition matters more than supplements. Hair is made of protein, and recovery from dengue often follows days of eating very little. Enough protein at every meal, and iron, B12 or vitamin D only where a test shows a shortfall, does more than a multi-ingredient hair supplement. Taking extra iron or vitamins without a deficiency does not speed up regrowth, and some, such as excess vitamin A or selenium, can themselves cause hair fall.

Minoxidil, as a solution or foam, is not routinely needed. It is considered when shedding continues well beyond six months or pattern thinning has been unmasked, and you are told to expect a temporary increase in shedding during the first weeks. PRP and GFC are useful for pattern hair loss, not for shedding that is already recovering, which is why they are not offered as a first step for post-dengue hair fall.

If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, or still under follow-up for dengue complications, tell the doctor before starting any hair medicine or supplement.

When not to buy a hair fall package

Shedding that started two months after dengue is expected to settle, so a course of PRP, GFC or mesotherapy sessions bought in the first panic rarely changes the outcome. The same goes for expensive oils and serums. Money is better spent on confirming the cause and correcting a real deficiency, and keeping procedures for pattern thinning if it turns out to be there.

Everyday care

Looking after your hair while it recovers

Helps

  • Protein at every meal: dal, paneer, eggs, curd, fish, chicken or soy.
  • Washing as often as your scalp needs; regular washing does not cause more loss, it only collects hairs that were already shed.
  • A wide-toothed comb and loose hairstyles while shedding is heavy.
  • Photographs of your parting in the same light every month, which show progress better than counting hairs.

Avoid

  • Starting several supplements at once without a test showing a deficiency.
  • Tight buns, ponytails and extensions, which add traction on top of shedding.
  • Hot styling tools, bleaching, keratin or smoothing treatments until the shedding settles.
  • Crash diets or skipping meals to regain your pre-illness weight quickly.
Red flags

When to see a dermatologist for hair fall after fever

Plenty of people manage post-dengue shedding with good food and patience. It is worth seeing a dermatologist if you notice round bald patches, loss of eyebrow or beard hair, an itchy, red or scaly scalp, broken hairs, or a parting or crown that looks clearly thinner than before the illness. Shedding that is still heavy more than six months after the fever, or that keeps coming in waves, also needs a review, since longer-running shedding, sometimes called chronic telogen effluvium, has its own causes to look for.

See your physician rather than waiting if you still have fatigue, breathlessness, a racing heart, unusual weight change or heavy periods after dengue. These can point to anaemia or a thyroid problem that needs treating for its own sake, and the hair usually improves once it is.

Why a dermatologist

Post-dengue hair fall assessed by a dermatologist

Most hair fall after dengue recovers by itself, and a good consultation often ends with reassurance, a short list of tests and a review date rather than a prescription. The value of a dermatologist is in confirming that the shedding really is temporary, catching alopecia areata, scalp disease or pattern thinning that needs earlier treatment, and stopping you from spending on treatments your hair does not need. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya examines the scalp under trichoscopy and sets the plan herself.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Hair fall after dengue FAQs

Is hair fall after dengue permanent?

Usually not. Post-dengue hair fall is mostly telogen effluvium, in which the follicles stay alive and grow new hairs once the cycle resets, typically over six to nine months. It can seem permanent when it has unmasked pattern hair loss, which then needs its own treatment.

How long after dengue does hair fall start?

Most people notice it between one and three months after the fever, and dermatology references place telogen effluvium typically two to four months after the trigger. Research from Taiwan's dengue epidemics found some people shed within the first month, so earlier shedding after dengue is not unusual.

How long does hair loss after dengue last?

Heavy shedding usually lasts a few months and then slows, with most people back to a normal shedding rate within six to nine months. Regrowth continues after that, so full density, especially in long hair, can take up to a year. Shedding beyond six months should be reviewed by a dermatologist.

Which doctor should I see for hair fall after dengue?

A dermatologist, who treats hair and scalp conditions. They can confirm telogen effluvium with a scalp examination and trichoscopy, order only the tests you need and rule out alopecia areata, scalp disease or pattern hair loss. See your physician as well if you still feel tired, breathless or unwell.

Does PRP help hair fall after dengue?

PRP is not usually needed for pure post-dengue shedding, which recovers on its own once the trigger has passed. It can help when the shedding has revealed male or female pattern hair loss, alongside medical treatment. A trichoscopy examination shows which you have before you pay for sessions.

Should I take biotin or hair vitamins after dengue?

Only if a test or your diet suggests a deficiency. Supplements do not speed up regrowth in people with normal levels, and high-dose biotin can distort some blood tests, including thyroid tests. Protein-rich meals and correcting proven low iron, B12 or vitamin D do more.

Does hair fall also happen after typhoid, malaria or COVID?

Yes. Any illness with high fever or significant physical stress can trigger telogen effluvium, and the pattern after typhoid, malaria, chikungunya or COVID is the same as after dengue: shedding a few months later that usually settles within six to nine months.

How much does hair fall treatment after dengue cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the consultation is Rs 1,800 and includes the scalp examination and trichoscopy. Many people need only targeted tests and a review. If another condition such as pattern hair loss is found and treatment is recommended, it is quoted in writing before anything is booked.
