Shingles treatment in Gurgaon
Shingles treatment in Gurgaon works best when it starts within three days of the rash. Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar confirms the diagnosis, starts antiviral tablets and pain relief, and follows the skin through healing so that the dark marks and scars shingles can leave on Indian skin are kept to a minimum.
How is shingles treated in Gurgaon?
Shingles treatment in Gurgaon centres on antiviral tablets such as acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir, which work best when started within 72 hours of the rash appearing, plus pain relief and simple skin care. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar confirms the diagnosis, checks for warning signs such as eye involvement, and reviews healing. The rash usually settles in two to four weeks.
Shingles treatment, in short
Typical figures for shingles in an otherwise healthy adult. Your own course depends on your age, where the rash is and your general health.
What shingles is, and why it appears
Shingles, or herpes zoster, is a reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox, the virus does not leave the body. It stays dormant in a nerve root near the spine or in the face, sometimes for decades, and can wake up when the immune system's control of it weakens. It then travels along that single nerve to the skin it supplies, which is why the rash appears as a band or patch on one side of the body only.
It is common. In its 2023 announcement of the Shingrix vaccine launch in India, GSK stated that one in three people develops shingles in a lifetime, and that by the age of 40 more than 90% of Indians studied already carried the virus. Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles, but the risk climbs after 50, with diabetes, cancer treatment, steroids or other immune-suppressing medicines, and during periods of severe stress or illness.
In much of North India shingles is called nagin, and there is a popular belief that it is dangerous if the band "meets" around the body. That is a myth. What matters is where the rash is, how early treatment starts and whether you have conditions that weaken immunity.
Pain or tingling on one side of the body for a day or two, followed by a cluster of blisters in the same area, is the classic pattern. If that is what you have, call the clinic the same day: antivirals are most useful within 72 hours of the rash appearing.
Shingles stages, day by day
A typical course in an adult with normal immunity. Timings vary from person to person.
Warning phase (1 to 5 days)
Burning, tingling, itching or deep aching pain in one area, sometimes with headache, tiredness or mild fever. With no rash yet, it is often mistaken for a pulled muscle, a heart or kidney problem, or a migraine.
Rash and blisters (days 1 to 7)
Red patches appear in a band or strip, then clusters of small fluid-filled blisters form on top. New blisters can keep appearing for several days. This is the window when antiviral tablets do the most good.
Crusting (about days 7 to 10)
Blisters dry out, turn yellow and then form crusts. Once every blister has crusted, the risk of passing the virus to others is very low.
Healing (weeks 2 to 4)
Crusts fall off and the skin underneath is pink, then often darker than the surrounding skin on Indian skin types. Pain usually fades with the rash, but in some people it continues for weeks or months.
Shingles, chickenpox or a cold sore: how do they differ?
All three are caused by herpes viruses, but they look, spread and are treated differently. Many rashes are also mistaken for shingles, which is one reason an early diagnosis helps.
| Shingles (herpes zoster) | Chickenpox and cold sores | |
|---|---|---|
| Virus | Varicella zoster virus reactivating in one nerve. | Chickenpox: first infection with varicella zoster. Cold sores: herpes simplex virus. |
| Where the rash is | A band or patch on one side of the body or face, not crossing the midline. | Chickenpox: spots all over the body. Cold sores: small clusters on or around the lips, recurring in the same spot. |
| Pain | Often severe, burning or stabbing, and can start before the rash. | Chickenpox is mainly itchy. Cold sores tingle and sting but are rarely severe. |
| Who gets it | Anyone who has had chickenpox, more often after 50 or with weakened immunity. | Chickenpox: mostly children who have not had it or the vaccine. Cold sores: any age. |
| How it spreads | Fluid from blisters can give chickenpox, not shingles, to someone who has never had chickenpox. | Both spread easily by contact; chickenpox also through the air. |
| Usual treatment | Antiviral tablets started early, pain relief, skin care. | Chickenpox: mostly supportive, antivirals for some adults. Cold sores: antiviral cream or tablets. |
Other rashes that can look like shingles include contact dermatitis, insect bite reactions, impetigo and herpes simplex on the body. A dermatologist can usually tell them apart on examination, and a swab can confirm the virus when the picture is unclear.
How shingles is treated in Gurgaon
Most shingles is managed in a clinic visit with tablets and follow-up. Hospital care is needed only for complicated cases.
Diagnosis
Dr. Tanya examines the rash, asks when the pain and blisters started, and checks your medicines, diabetes and immunity. The pattern is usually enough for a diagnosis; a swab test may be arranged if it is unusual.
Antiviral course
An antiviral such as acyclovir, valacyclovir or famciclovir is prescribed, with the dose adjusted for your kidney function and age. Taking every dose for the full course matters more than which of the three is chosen.
Pain control
Simple painkillers are used for mild pain. Burning or electric-shock nerve pain may need a nerve-pain medicine, started at a low dose and adjusted, particularly in older adults.
Skin care and review
You are shown how to keep blisters clean and dry and when to cover them. A review checks healing, watches for infection and plans treatment of any dark marks or scars once the skin has closed.
What to do in the first 72 hours of shingles
Both the NHS and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise that antiviral treatment for shingles works best when it is started within three days, or 72 hours, of the rash appearing. Started in this window, antivirals shorten the time new blisters keep forming, speed healing and reduce acute pain. They do not erase the rash overnight, so improvement over several days is normal.
If you are past 72 hours, it is still worth being seen. Doctors commonly still prescribe antivirals when new blisters are still appearing, when the rash is on the face or near the eye, and in people over 50 or with weakened immunity. The decision is made on your situation, not the calendar alone.
In practice: photograph the rash on day one so its spread can be judged, note when the pain and blisters started, make a list of your medicines, and book the earliest appointment you can. Le Dermaire is open on weekday evenings and on Sundays, which helps when a rash appears over a weekend. Until you are seen, keep the area clean and dry, wear loose cotton clothing, and keep away from pregnant women, newborn babies and anyone with weak immunity who has not had chickenpox.
Do not apply steroid creams, home remedies such as toothpaste or turmeric paste, or creams bought for a "skin allergy" to a painful blistering rash. Steroids can let a viral rash spread, and pastes can irritate and infect broken skin.
When shingles needs urgent care
See a doctor the same day if
- The rash is on the forehead, eyelid, around the eye or on the tip or side of the nose.
- You are over 50, pregnant, or have diabetes, cancer, HIV or take steroids or immune-suppressing medicines.
- The rash is spreading beyond one band or is on both sides of the body.
- Pain is severe or not controlled by simple painkillers.
- A child or teenager has a shingles-like rash.
Go to a hospital emergency department if
- Your vision blurs, the eye is red and painful, or light hurts the eye.
- You develop weakness of one side of the face, ear pain with blisters in the ear, or dizziness.
- You have severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion or drowsiness.
- Blisters become widespread over the body with high fever.
- The skin becomes hot, swollen and red with pus, suggesting infection.
Pain, dark marks and scars after shingles
Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) is nerve pain that continues after the rash has healed. GSK's 2023 India launch statement describes it as the most common complication, affecting 5 to 25% of people with shingles depending on age, and lasting from three months to several years. It is more likely with older age, severe pain at the start and a rash on the face. Early antiviral treatment and good pain control during the acute phase are the main ways to reduce the risk. If PHN develops, nerve-pain medicines and numbing patches are used, and persistent cases may be referred to a pain specialist.
Dark marks are very common after shingles in Indian skin. This is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the same darkening that follows acne or a burn. It fades slowly by itself over months, and faster with strict sun protection and prescription lightening creams once the skin has fully healed. Scrubbing, bleaching or home peels make it worse.
Scars can form where blisters were deep, infected or picked. Shallow pitted scars may be improved later with treatments such as microneedling or fractional laser, while light or white patches need time and assessment before anything is tried. Treatment of marks and scars waits until the skin is completely healed and any nerve pain has settled.
If shingles keeps coming back, or appears at a young age without an obvious trigger, you may be advised to have tests for diabetes or conditions that affect immunity. Most people, though, have shingles only once or twice in a lifetime.
Is there a shingles vaccine in India?
Yes. GSK launched its recombinant shingles vaccine, Shingrix, in India on 24 April 2023 for adults aged 50 and above. According to the company's launch statement, it is given as two injections into the muscle, has shown more than 90% efficacy against shingles in trials, and can provide at least ten years of protection. It also reduces the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia, because preventing shingles prevents the nerve pain that follows it.
The vaccine is not a treatment for an active rash. It is usually considered once you have recovered, especially if you are over 50, have diabetes, heart, lung or kidney disease, or have had shingles before. Whether it suits you, and when, depends on your health and any medicines you take, so it is worth discussing with your physician or at your review visit.
Shingles treatment cost in Gurgaon
Most shingles is treated with a consultation, a prescription and a review visit. The medicines are bought from a pharmacy, and their cost depends on which antiviral is prescribed and the dose. Any test, such as a swab, is explained before it is done.
Why waiting to see if it settles can cost more
Shingles started on antivirals early usually means a shorter, less painful illness. Leaving it, or treating it as an allergy with steroid creams, can lead to a longer rash, more scarring and a higher chance of lasting nerve pain, all of which take far more time and money to manage than one early visit.
Living with shingles while it heals
Helps
- Taking every antiviral dose on time until the course is finished.
- Cool, damp compresses on the rash for 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day.
- Loose cotton clothing, and a light non-stick dressing where clothes rub.
- Resting, eating well and drinking enough fluids.
- Keeping blisters covered around babies, pregnant women and anyone with low immunity.
Avoid
- Bursting or picking blisters and crusts, which raises the risk of infection and scars.
- Steroid creams, antibiotic-steroid combinations or allergy creams unless prescribed.
- Home pastes, oils and powders on broken skin.
- Tight clothing, sticky plasters and rough fabrics over the rash.
- Close contact with people who have never had chickenpox until every blister has crusted.
Shingles care led by a dermatologist
Shingles is a skin and nerve illness, and its outcome depends on early decisions: confirming it is shingles and not an allergy or infection, starting the right antiviral at the right dose, spotting eye and nerve warning signs, and controlling pain before it becomes entrenched. A dermatologist can also follow the skin through healing and treat the pigmentation and scarring that shingles often leaves on Indian skin, which a short pharmacy visit does not cover.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.
Shingles treatment FAQs
Which doctor should I see for shingles in Gurgaon?
A dermatologist is the specialist for the shingles rash and its after-effects, and can start antiviral treatment the same day. Your family physician can also treat uncomplicated shingles. Shingles affecting the eye also needs an eye specialist, and severe nerve pain that lasts may need a pain specialist.
How long does shingles last?
The rash usually heals in two to four weeks: blisters for about a week, crusting for another week or so, then fading. Pain often settles with the rash. In some people, especially older adults, nerve pain continues for months, which is called post-herpetic neuralgia.
Is shingles contagious?
You cannot catch shingles from someone with shingles. However, fluid from the blisters can give chickenpox to a person who has never had chickenpox or its vaccine. Keep the rash covered and avoid pregnant women, newborn babies and people with weak immunity until every blister has crusted.
Can I take antivirals after 72 hours?
Antivirals work best within 72 hours of the rash appearing, but they are often still prescribed later if new blisters are still forming, the rash is on the face or near the eye, or you are older or have weakened immunity. It is worth being seen even if you are past three days.
How much does shingles treatment cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire most shingles is treated with a consultation, a prescription and a review. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. Medicines are bought from a pharmacy, and any test or later treatment for marks and scars is explained and quoted before it is done.
Can shingles come back?
Yes, although most people have it only once. The CDC notes that shingles can recur. Repeated episodes, or shingles at a young age without a clear trigger, may prompt tests for diabetes or conditions that affect immunity. Vaccination after recovery reduces the risk of another episode.
Will shingles leave a mark on my skin?
It often leaves a dark patch on Indian skin, which fades slowly over months with sun protection and, once healed, prescription lightening creams. Deeper or infected blisters can leave small scars. Not picking crusts and treating shingles early reduce both, and remaining marks can be treated later.
