Rosacea treatment in Gurgaon
Persistent redness, flushing and acne-like bumps on the face, diagnosed and treated by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar. Rosacea is controlled rather than cured, and with the right routine and treatment most people see calmer, more comfortable skin.
How is rosacea treated in Gurgaon?
Rosacea is controlled rather than cured, with a simplified skincare routine, trigger avoidance, prescription creams and, where bumps are widespread, tablets. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar first separates rosacea from acne, allergy and steroid-induced dermatitis, and reviews every product you use. Bumps typically respond in 6 to 12 weeks, while background redness fades more slowly.
Rosacea, in short
The key points. Your plan depends on which features of rosacea you have, what triggers your flares and whether creams used in the past have altered the skin.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a long-term inflammatory condition of the central face: cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. The blood vessels in the skin react too readily, causing flushing and, over time, persistent redness and visible fine vessels. Many people also get red bumps and pus spots, and the skin often burns or stings with products that never used to bother it.
Its exact cause is not fully understood. An overactive immune response in the skin, a tendency for facial blood vessels to dilate easily, and higher numbers of the tiny Demodex mites that normally live in facial pores all play a part. It is not caused by poor hygiene, and it is not an infection.
On brown skin, rosacea redness can be harder to see and may look more like a dusky or darker patch with bumps and a burning feeling. That is one reason it is under-recognised in India and often treated as acne or allergy.
Features of rosacea, and what sets it off
Rosacea is described by its features rather than as fixed types; many people have more than one.
Redness and flushing
Flushing that comes quickly and lingers, and background redness across the cheeks and nose, often with fine visible vessels. Skin may feel hot, tight or sensitive.
Bumps and pustules
Red bumps and small pus spots on a red background, without the blackheads and whiteheads of acne. This form responds well to treatment.
Thickened skin
Gradual thickening and enlargement of the skin, most often on the nose. It is uncommon, more likely in men, and easier to prevent than to reverse.
Eye involvement
Gritty, dry, red or watery eyes and swollen eyelids. Ocular rosacea needs attention because it can affect the surface of the eye, and an eye specialist's opinion may be advised.
Common triggers
Sun and heat, hot kitchens, saunas, hot drinks, spicy food, alcohol, strenuous exercise, sudden temperature changes, stress, and harsh skincare.
Steroid-damaged skin
Months of steroid or mixed fairness creams on the face can cause a rosacea-like rash that flares badly when the cream is stopped. It needs a careful, staged withdrawal.
How rosacea is treated
Identify what you have, calm the skin, then keep it calm.
Diagnosis
Dr. Tanya examines the face, often with dermoscopy, and separates rosacea from acne, seborrhoeic dermatitis, allergy, lupus and steroid-induced dermatitis, which can all look similar.
Product and trigger review
Every cream and product used on the face is reviewed, especially anything bought for fairness, pimples or allergy, and your personal triggers are identified.
Calming plan
A simplified routine, the right prescription cream, and tablets where bumps are widespread or eyes are involved, with a written plan for flares.
Maintenance
Once the skin settles, treatment is reduced to the least that keeps it controlled, and options for remaining redness are discussed.
Rosacea treatment options explained
Gentle skincare is part of every plan: a mild non-foaming cleanser, a simple fragrance-free moisturiser and a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. Scrubs, toners, strong acids, retinoids and facial treatments that heat or irritate the skin are paused, as they commonly worsen rosacea.
Topical treatments target the bumps and inflammation. Ivermectin cream acts partly on Demodex mites and is effective for bumps and pustules; metronidazole and azelaic acid are well-established alternatives. They are used daily for several weeks before the effect is judged, then continued less often for maintenance.
Oral doxycycline at a low, anti-inflammatory dose is used when bumps are widespread or the eyes are affected. At this dose it works on inflammation rather than as a conventional antibiotic course, and it is taken for a defined period and then reviewed. Other oral medicines are considered for stubborn cases.
Laser or light treatment can reduce persistent background redness and visible vessels, which creams improve only modestly. Where this suits your skin it may be recommended after the inflammation has been calmed, with settings chosen carefully for Indian skin because of the risk of pigment change.
For steroid-induced rosacea-like dermatitis, stopping a strong cream suddenly often causes a severe rebound flare. The steroid is withdrawn in stages under supervision, with calming treatment in its place, and the skin usually improves over several weeks to a few months.
Rosacea treatment cost in Gurgaon
For most people the cost is the consultation, prescription creams or tablets, and a simple skincare routine. Laser or light treatment for residual redness, if suitable, is quoted in writing after assessment.
Fewer products often cost less
Many people with rosacea arrive with a shelf of serums, acids and fairness creams that are keeping the skin inflamed. A short, gentle routine plus the right prescription treatment is usually cheaper and works better.
What to expect from rosacea treatment
Burning and stinging often ease within the first few weeks once irritating products are stopped. Bumps and pustules typically improve clearly over six to twelve weeks of treatment. Background redness and visible vessels change more slowly and may need a procedure to improve significantly.
Rosacea tends to come and go. Flares after sun, heat or a trigger food do not mean treatment has failed, and a written flare plan helps you respond early. Most people continue some form of maintenance, such as a cream a few times a week, to keep it quiet.
See a doctor promptly if rosacea affects your eyes with pain, blurred vision or sensitivity to light. These need same-day assessment, and an eye specialist may need to be involved.
What helps, and what to avoid
Helps
- A broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, reapplied when outdoors, plus shade and a hat in summer.
- A short, fragrance-free routine: gentle cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen.
- Lukewarm water to wash the face, patted dry, never rubbed.
- Letting hot tea and coffee cool a little before drinking.
- Noting your own triggers, as they vary from person to person.
Avoid
- Steroid creams, mixed creams and fairness creams on the face.
- Scrubs, toners with alcohol, strong acids and home remedies such as lemon.
- Facials, steaming and saunas during active rosacea.
- Very hot showers directed at the face.
- Stopping prescribed treatment the moment the skin looks better.
Rosacea treated by a skin specialist
Rosacea is frequently mistaken for acne, allergy or melasma, and treating it as acne with harsh products or as allergy with steroids can make it much worse. A dermatologist recognises rosacea on Indian skin, identifies steroid-induced damage and withdraws it safely, and combines prescription treatment with procedures for redness only when the skin is ready.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.
Rosacea FAQs
Can rosacea be cured permanently?
Rosacea cannot be cured permanently, but it can be controlled well. Bumps and burning usually respond to treatment within a few months, flares become less frequent once triggers are managed, and persistent redness can be reduced with procedures where suitable. Most people use a simple maintenance treatment to keep the skin calm.
Is it rosacea or acne?
Both cause red bumps and pus spots, but rosacea has no blackheads or whiteheads, usually comes with flushing, redness and stinging, and tends to affect the centre of the face in adults. The treatments differ, and many acne products irritate rosacea. An examination is the reliable way to tell them apart.
How much does rosacea treatment cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the features of your rosacea and the treatment needed, which is mostly prescription creams or tablets. Laser or light treatment for residual redness, if suitable, is quoted separately in writing. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.
Can steroid or fairness creams cause rosacea?
Yes. Using steroid creams, or mixed fairness and pimple creams containing a steroid, on the face for weeks or months can cause a rosacea-like rash with redness, bumps, burning and visible vessels. It often flares sharply when the cream is stopped, so withdrawal should be planned with a dermatologist rather than done suddenly.
Which foods and drinks trigger rosacea?
Common triggers include alcohol, especially red wine, spicy food, hot drinks and very hot food. Triggers differ from person to person, so there is no need to cut out everything. Noting what happens before a flare for a few weeks helps you find and limit your own triggers.
Does laser help rosacea redness?
Laser and light treatments can reduce persistent redness and visible blood vessels, which creams improve only a little. They do not stop rosacea itself, so prescription treatment and sun protection continue. Suitability depends on skin type, and settings must be chosen carefully on Indian skin to avoid pigment changes.
Can I wear makeup with rosacea?
Yes. Mineral makeup and a green-tinted primer can help to neutralise redness. Choose fragrance-free products, remove them gently with a mild cleanser, and stop anything that stings or burns. Makeup does not worsen rosacea as long as the products are gentle and the skin is cleansed at night.
