Laser toning and pico laser in Gurgaon
Q-switched and pico laser for pigmentation, dark spots, uneven skin tone and tattoo ink, used by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar only after the cause of the darkening is clear. In Indian skin, the gentlest setting that works is the right one.
What is laser toning and how many sessions are needed?
Laser toning passes a low-energy Q-switched or pico laser evenly over the skin to break up excess pigment and soften uneven tone, with little or no downtime. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar plans typically 4 to 6 or more sessions, 2 to 4 weeks apart, alongside sunscreen and creams. Discrete dark spots often need only 1 to 3 sessions.
Laser toning, in short
Typical figures. Your own plan depends on the type and depth of pigment, your skin type and how your skin responds to a test area.
How Q-switched and pico lasers work
Q-switched and picosecond lasers fire extremely short pulses of light, billionths or trillionths of a second long. Pigment absorbs the energy so quickly that it shatters into tiny fragments before the heat can spread to the surrounding skin. The body then clears these fragments over the following weeks, which is why marks fade gradually after a session rather than immediately.
Laser toning is one way of using these lasers. Instead of targeting individual spots at high energy, a low-energy beam is passed evenly over the whole face in several passes. Each session removes a little excess pigment with little or no downtime, so changes in uneven tone and dullness build across a course rather than in one visit.
The same lasers are also used at higher settings for discrete spots, such as sun spots and freckles, and for tattoo ink. Which setting is used, and whether laser is the right tool at all, depends on what is causing the darkening. That is decided by examination, not by the colour of the mark alone.
Pigmentation that looks like sun damage may be melasma, and a dark spot may need dermoscopy before any laser. Diagnosis comes first at Le Dermaire, and some patients are advised creams and peels instead.
What laser toning and pigment lasers are used for
How the laser is used for each concern, and where each concern is explained in full.
Uneven skin tone and dullness
Blotchy, uneven tone from cumulative sun exposure and dull-looking skin are the main reasons for laser toning. Low-energy passes over the whole face, every 2 to 4 weeks, gradually even out the colour. Results are steady rather than dramatic, and they last only with daily sunscreen, so toning is always paired with a home routine.
Sun spots and age spots
Well-defined brown spots on the cheeks, temples and backs of the hands are among the marks that respond best to pigment laser, often within 1 to 3 sessions. Each spot is checked with dermoscopy first, since some look-alikes need different treatment.

Pigment laser clears individual freckles faster than creams, though new ones appear with sun exposure, so an occasional top-up is common.

Laser is not a first-line treatment for melasma. Low-energy toning may help selected patients once the skin is stable on creams and sunscreen, but frequent or strong sessions can cause rebound darkening and permanent pale spots. The melasma guide explains the full plan.

Dark marks left after acne usually fade with creams and peels. Gentle toning is considered only for stubborn marks, at cautious settings, since heat can create new pigment.

Laser lip toning at conservative settings is part of the lip lightening plan, after the cause of the darkening is found.

Both break pigment with ultra-short pulses. Pico pulses are shorter still, which changes how the pigment breaks up.
| Q-switched laser | Pico laser | |
|---|---|---|
| Pulse length | Nanoseconds (billionths of a second). | Picoseconds (trillionths of a second). |
| How it acts | Breaks pigment mainly through a rapid heat effect. | Shatters pigment with more pressure effect and less heat. |
| Track record | Long established for pigment and tattoos, including in Indian skin. | Newer; studies suggest similar or sometimes better clearance in fewer sessions for some uses. |
| Uses | Toning, sun spots, freckles, some birthmarks, tattoos. | The same range; often preferred for stubborn or multicoloured tattoo ink. |
| Downtime | Little after toning; spots may darken and flake over a few days. | Similar; often slightly less redness. |
| Risks in Indian skin | Temporary darkening or pale patches if settings are too strong or too frequent. | The same risks, though less heat may lower them somewhat. |
The skill of the person setting the laser matters more than the label. Which of these lasers is used for your concern is confirmed at consultation.
Laser toning for Indian skin, done safely
Melanin in medium to darker skin absorbs laser energy along with the target pigment, so Indian skin can react with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, darker patches after treatment, or with hypopigmentation, pale or white spots. The second is a recognised risk of frequent low-energy toning, particularly in melasma, and it can be permanent.
The risk is managed by choosing longer wavelengths that pass surface pigment, keeping energy modest, spacing sessions at least two weeks apart rather than weekly, and stopping when the skin stops improving rather than chasing a lighter shade. A test area, a sound topical routine and strict sunscreen are part of every plan.
Laser toning evens out excess pigment. It does not lighten your natural skin colour, and a plan that promises to make skin “fairer” is aiming at the wrong goal and carries the highest risk.
How a laser toning course works
Nothing is lasered on the first visit unless the diagnosis and plan are clear.
Diagnosis
Dr. Tanya examines the pigmentation, uses dermoscopy on spots, and checks for melasma, post-acne marks and medicines that make skin sensitive to light. You get a diagnosis and a plan.
Preparation and test
Skin is often primed with creams and sunscreen for a few weeks. A small test area is treated and reviewed for darker skin or a first laser.
Sessions
Eyes are shielded and the laser is passed over the area. Toning takes around 15 to 20 minutes for the face; spot treatment is quicker. Settings are recorded each time.
Review
Progress is compared against starting photographs. If the response is slower than expected or pale spots appear, the plan changes rather than adding sessions.
What results to expect, and when
Discrete sun spots and freckles usually darken slightly for a few days after a session, then flake away over about a week, leaving lighter skin underneath. Some clear in one session; others fade in stages over two or three. Pigment that sits deeper in the skin fades more slowly, and some marks lighten rather than disappear.
Toning works more quietly. After the first two or three sessions most people notice a brighter, more even look rather than a dramatic change, and the effect builds across the course as excess pigment is cleared a little at a time. Progress is judged against photographs taken in the same light, because day-to-day changes are hard to see in the mirror.
Results last only while the trigger is kept in check. Sun, heat, hormones and inflammation all restart pigment production, so daily sunscreen and the home routine prescribed alongside the laser are what keep the skin even once the course ends. Occasional maintenance sessions may be suggested, spaced well apart.
If treated skin turns lighter than the surrounding skin, or patches darken after a session, the course is paused and reviewed. Both changes are easier to correct when caught early.
Laser toning cost in Gurgaon
The cost of laser toning depends on the area, the number of sessions and whether spots or tattoos are treated at different settings. You receive a written quote after the consultation, before anything is booked.
Why more toning is not better
Packages of many closely spaced toning sessions can look like value, but frequent toning is the main cause of the pale, mottled spots that are hard to reverse. A shorter course at safe intervals, with a sound home routine, usually gives a better and longer-lasting result.
Before and after laser toning
Before
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning and self-tan for two weeks before each session.
- Use any priming creams exactly as advised.
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids a few days before, as advised.
- Tell the clinic about light-sensitising medicines, isotretinoin and cold sores.
After
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily and reapply when outdoors.
- Cleanse gently and moisturise; do not scrub treated spots as they darken and flake.
- Continue prescribed creams once the skin has settled, as advised.
- Avoid saunas, steam and strong actives for a few days.
Pigment lasers set by a skin specialist
The difference between a good toning result and pale, patchy skin is mostly judgement: recognising melasma, checking that a dark spot is safe to laser, choosing the wavelength and energy for your skin, and knowing when to stop. A dermatologist can also treat the underlying cause with creams and manage a reaction properly if one occurs, which is why every pigment laser plan at Le Dermaire is made and supervised by Dr. Tanya.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.
Laser toning FAQs
How many laser toning sessions are needed?
For diffuse uneven tone, typically four to six or more sessions, two to four weeks apart. Discrete sun spots and freckles often need only one to three sessions at spot settings. Your expected range is given at consultation and reviewed as your skin responds.
How much does laser toning cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the area, the number of sessions and whether spots or tattoos are treated, and is quoted in writing after the consultation. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.
Is laser toning safe for Indian skin?
Yes, when the laser, energy and interval are chosen for darker skin. The main risks are temporary darkening and pale spots from treating too strongly or too often. Conservative settings, sessions at least two weeks apart, a test area and daily sunscreen reduce these risks.
Does laser toning work for melasma?
Laser is not a first-line treatment for melasma. Low-energy toning may help selected patients alongside creams and sun protection, but frequent or strong sessions can cause rebound darkening and permanent white spots. Melasma is controlled mainly with sunscreen and prescription creams.
Which is better, Q-switched or pico laser?
Both are effective for pigment and tattoos. Pico lasers use shorter pulses and may clear some pigment or ink in fewer sessions with slightly less heat, while Q-switched lasers have a longer track record. The settings and the diagnosis matter more than the type of laser.
Is there downtime after laser toning?
Usually very little. Mild redness may last a few hours and most people return to work the same day. When individual spots are treated at higher settings, they darken and flake off over about a week.
Does laser toning make skin fairer?
No. Laser toning reduces excess pigment such as sun damage and uneven patches. It does not change your natural skin colour, and treating to lighten normal skin raises the risk of pale or mottled patches.
How long do laser toning results last?
Cleared spots and evened tone last as long as the skin is protected. Sun exposure, hormones and inflammation can bring pigment back, so daily sunscreen and a maintenance routine are essential, and occasional top-up sessions may be advised.
Is laser toning painful?
Toning feels like light, warm flicks against the skin and most people manage without numbing. Spot and tattoo treatment is sharper, so numbing cream and cooling are used.
