Syringoma removal in Gurgaon

Syringoma removal in Gurgaon for the small, firm, skin-coloured bumps that cluster under the eyes and on the lower eyelids. Dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar first confirms the bumps are syringomas and not milia, DPN or xanthelasma, then plans a gentle, staged treatment that respects the thin eyelid skin and Indian skin's tendency to darken after heat.

Quick answer

How are syringomas removed, and do they come back?

Syringoma removal in Gurgaon is done in a dermatology clinic, most often with fine electrocautery or radiofrequency, or with a carbon dioxide (CO2) or erbium laser, which flatten each bump under numbing cream. Syringomas cannot be squeezed out and creams rarely clear them. They improve well but usually need more than one sitting, and new or regrowing bumps are common, so the goal is flatter, less visible skin rather than permanent removal.

Understanding syringomas

What syringomas are, and why they sit under the eyes

A syringoma is a harmless growth of sweat duct tissue. DermNet, the New Zealand dermatology reference (Singh and Oakley, reviewed December 2024), describes it as a benign tumour arising from the part of the eccrine sweat duct that runs through the outer skin. Syringomas appear as firm, rounded bumps one to three millimetres across, skin-coloured, yellowish or slightly brown, usually in clusters on the lower eyelids and upper cheeks. They can also appear on the forehead, neck, chest, armpits and genital skin.

According to the same reference, syringomas affect about 1% of people, are roughly twice as common in women as in men, usually start in adolescence or later, and are more common in people with darker skin and of Asian heritage. That is exactly the skin most patients in Gurgaon have, which is why they are a frequent reason for a dermatology visit here. They are much more common in Down syndrome, and a clear cell form is linked with diabetes.

Syringomas do not hurt, are not contagious and do not turn into cancer. They rarely go away by themselves. The reason they are hard to treat is depth: the bump you see is the top of a cluster of tiny ducts that extend into the dermis, the deeper layer of skin. Treatment that only skims the surface leaves the deeper part behind, so the bump returns. Treatment that goes too deep on thin eyelid skin risks a mark. The skill is in the balance.

Syringomas have no opening and contain nothing to squeeze. Pressing, pricking or salon extraction does not remove them and often leaves a dark mark on the eyelid that lasts longer than the bump bothered you.

Types of syringoma

The type affects whether removal is sensible, how many sittings are likely and what else should be checked.

Localised (periorbital)

The common form: a cluster of bumps on the lower lids and upper cheeks, sometimes the upper lids. This is the type most people want removed and the one that responds best to staged cautery or laser.

Eruptive (generalised)

Crops of many small, often brownish bumps on the neck, chest, abdomen or arms, usually appearing in young adults. With dozens or hundreds of lesions, removing each one is rarely practical, and treatment focuses on the most visible areas.

Familial

Syringomas that run in families and may start earlier in life. Treatment is the same, but new lesions are more likely to keep appearing.

Clear cell syringoma

A variant identified on biopsy that DermNet links with diabetes mellitus. If a biopsy shows this type, checking blood sugar is sensible.

Down syndrome-associated

Syringomas are far more common in people with Down syndrome. Treatment decisions are made with the family and kept as gentle as possible.

Genital (vulval) syringoma

Uncommon and sometimes itchy. These are treated mainly for symptoms, and any itchy genital bump is examined properly rather than assumed to be a syringoma.

Diagnosis first

Syringoma vs milia, DPN and xanthelasma: how to tell them apart

Most bumps under the eyes are one of four things, and each is removed differently. This table shows the usual differences. A dermatologist confirms which you have, often with a dermatoscope, a lit magnifier that shows structures the eye cannot.

SyringomaLook-alikes
ColourSkin-coloured, yellowish or light brown.Milia: pearly white. DPN: dark brown to black. Xanthelasma: soft yellow.
Feel and shapeFirm, smooth, slightly flat-topped bumps, often merging in a cluster.Milia: hard, round seed-like dots. DPN: soft, raised, mole-like. Xanthelasma: soft, flat plaques rather than bumps.
Usual siteLower eyelids and upper cheeks, often on both sides.Milia: lids, cheeks, nose. DPN: cheekbones and around the eyes. Xanthelasma: inner corners of the eyelids.
What it isOvergrown sweat duct tissue in the deeper skin.Milia: trapped keratin cysts. DPN: a benign surface growth. Xanthelasma: cholesterol-laden cells.
Can it be expressed? No. There is nothing inside to press out.Milia can be released through a tiny opening. DPN and xanthelasma cannot.
Extra check neededRarely; a biopsy if the diagnosis is unclear.Xanthelasma: a blood lipid test is usually advised.
Usual removalFine cautery, radiofrequency or ablative laser, in stages.Milia: de-roofing. DPN: light cautery. Xanthelasma: chemical, laser or surgical removal.

Sebaceous hyperplasia (soft yellow bumps with a central dip on the forehead and nose) and, rarely, a skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma can also resemble syringomas. DermNet lists these, along with trichoepithelioma and microcystic adnexal carcinoma, among the conditions to rule out. Any bump that grows quickly, bleeds or is single and changing is examined before anything is treated.

Treatment options

Syringoma treatment options compared

There is no single best treatment. A systematic review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (Williams and Shinkai, 2016) concluded that treating multiple syringomas continues to pose a significant challenge, and every method trades depth, which lowers recurrence, against the risk of a mark. DermNet lists the same main options used by dermatologists worldwide.

Fine electrocautery or radiofrequency uses a very fine tip to deliver controlled heat into each bump, flattening it from within. It treats lesions one at a time, so it suits a moderate number of clearly visible syringomas, and the depth can be adjusted bump by bump on the thin eyelid skin. Each spot forms a tiny crust that falls off in about a week. It is the same family of technique dermatologists use to remove DPN and skin tags.

Ablative laser (CO2 or erbium) vaporises the bumps layer by layer, either one at a time or with a fractional pattern over the area. It allows very fine control near the eye. The trade-off is that ablative lasers carry a higher risk of temporary dark patches, and occasionally lighter patches, in Indian skin, so settings are kept conservative and treatment is staged rather than done in one heavy pass.

Surgical excision cuts out a lesion and closes the wound with stitches. It removes the full depth and suits a single larger or uncertain lesion, or when a biopsy is needed, but it is impractical for clusters of tiny bumps because each cut leaves a scar.

Creams and medicines such as topical tretinoin or atropine are listed in the literature and are occasionally tried for eruptive syringomas, but results are usually modest. Oral isotretinoin has been tried in widespread cases with mixed results; a case report in the Medical Journal Armed Forces India (Singh, Tewari and Gupta, 2014) described no significant improvement after 16 weeks. Creams are not a substitute for removal of under-eye syringomas.

Cryotherapy, dermabrasion and chemical peels appear in older literature but are rarely chosen around the eyes in Indian skin because they are harder to control and more likely to leave pigment change.

Be wary of any clinic that promises syringomas will never come back. No method reliably prevents recurrence, because the tissue extends deep into the skin and new lesions can form in untreated skin.

Decision guide

Cautery or laser for syringomas: which should I choose?

The method is chosen at the examination, but this is how the main factors usually point.

Fine cautery or radiofrequencyAblative laser (CO2 or erbium)
Number of bumpsA few to a moderate cluster, treated one by one.Moderate to dense clusters, or a whole lower-lid area.
ControlDepth set bump by bump with a fine tip.Very fine layer-by-layer control; can also treat an area fractionally.
Indian skinRisk of temporary dark spots, reduced by shallow passes.Higher risk of dark or light patches, reduced by conservative settings.
HealingPinpoint crusts for about a week.Crusting and redness for about a week, sometimes pinkness for longer.
SittingsUsually staged over two or more visits.Usually staged over two or more visits.
Not suitable whenActive infection or cold sores nearby, untreated keloid tendency, unclear diagnosis.Same, plus recent tanning, active melasma nearby, or recent isotretinoin until assessed.

In both cases, treating fewer bumps more carefully and coming back for the rest gives a better result on eyelid skin than trying to clear everything in one aggressive sitting.

How syringoma removal in Gurgaon works

Removal is planned only once the diagnosis is clear and you know what a realistic result looks like.

1

Examination

Dr. Tanya examines the bumps, with dermoscopy where useful, to separate syringomas from milia, DPN, xanthelasma and sebaceous hyperplasia. She asks about diabetes, family history and any bump that has changed. A small biopsy is suggested only if the diagnosis is uncertain.

2

Plan and expectations

You are told how many lesions are suited to treatment, which method is planned, how many sittings are likely and what recurrence means for you, before anything is booked.

3

Treatment

Numbing cream is applied first. The eye is protected, and each syringoma is flattened with fine cautery or treated with laser at conservative settings. A first sitting often treats the most visible bumps or one side, to see how your skin heals.

4

Review and staging

Healing and colour are checked before the next sitting. Bumps that remain raised are retreated, and any dark mark is treated early. Later, an occasional touch-up deals with regrowth or new bumps.

Results

What results to expect, and do syringomas come back?

After healing, treated syringomas are flatter and much less noticeable, and makeup and light catch the lower lids more evenly. Some bumps flatten fully after one sitting; deeper ones may need a second or third pass. The treated skin can look pink or slightly darker for some weeks before it settles, so the result is judged once that colour has faded, not in the first fortnight.

Recurrence is the honest limitation. DermNet notes that syringomas rarely regress on their own and often recur after superficial treatment, because they extend into the deeper dermis. Over months to years, some treated bumps can rise again and new ones can appear nearby. For most people this means an occasional touch-up rather than a failed treatment, but it is worth knowing before you start.

When not to treat: if you have dozens of tiny eruptive syringomas spread over the body, if the bumps do not bother you, or if your skin has a strong tendency to keloids or long-lasting dark marks, the risks of removal may outweigh the benefit. Leaving harmless syringomas alone is a perfectly reasonable choice.

Pricing

Syringoma removal cost in Gurgaon

The cost of syringoma removal depends mainly on how many bumps are treated, whether one or both eyes and other areas are included, the method used and how many sittings your skin needs. You are told the cost after the examination, before anything is treated.

Why the cheapest single sitting is rarely the cheapest result

A quick, aggressive session can flatten every bump at once and leave dark rings under the eyes that take months to fade, while a too-shallow one simply lets the bumps return. Ask how many sittings are planned, how recurrence and touch-ups are handled, and who decides the settings, rather than comparing the price of one visit.

Safety

Is syringoma removal safe, and what are the side effects?

In a dermatology clinic, syringoma removal is a minor procedure. Expect mild swelling of the lower lids for a day or two, pinpoint redness and tiny crusts at each treated spot that fall off in about a week, and some pinkness after that. Slight bruising can occur because eyelid skin is thin.

The main risk in Indian skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a temporary dark mark where the skin was heated, and less often a lighter spot. It is reduced by shallow, staged treatment, avoiding tanning before and after, and strict sun protection, and it is treated promptly if it appears. Infection and visible scarring are uncommon when the crusts are left alone. DermNet notes that all destructive methods can scar, which is why depth is kept conservative on the eyelids.

Treatment may be postponed over cold sores, infection or inflamed skin near the eyes, and on recently tanned skin. Tell the clinic about blood thinners, diabetes, a tendency to keloids, recent isotretinoin, and any pacemaker or implanted device if cautery is planned.

Preparation and aftercare

Before and after syringoma removal

Before

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning and facials on the area for two weeks.
  • Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids around the eyes a few days before, as advised.
  • Tell the clinic about cold sores, blood thinners, diabetes and keloids.
  • Come without eye makeup, and remove contact lenses if laser is planned near the eyes.

After

  • Cleanse gently and apply only the ointment advised on the crusts.
  • Let the crusts fall off on their own; do not pick or rub them.
  • Use sunscreen on healed skin and wear sunglasses outdoors for several weeks.
  • Avoid eye makeup on treated spots until they have healed, and report any darkening early.

Why a dermatologist

Syringoma removal by a skin specialist

Syringomas sit on the thinnest skin of the face, look like several other bumps, and sit deeper than they appear. A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, chooses the depth for each bump on eyelid skin, stages treatment so Indian skin does not darken, and is honest about recurrence. That is why syringomas at Le Dermaire are examined and treated by Dr. Tanya herself, with a plan made around your skin rather than a fixed package.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

Syringoma removal FAQs

Can syringomas be removed permanently?

Treated syringomas can be flattened well, but no method guarantees they will never return. They extend into the deeper skin, so some regrow, and new ones can appear nearby. Most people manage this with an occasional touch-up sitting.

How many sessions are needed for syringoma removal?

It depends on how many bumps there are and how deep they sit. A small cluster may flatten in one or two sittings, while dense clusters on both eyelids are usually treated in stages over several visits, with healing time between. You are given an estimate after the examination.

How much does syringoma removal cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire, the cost depends on the number of lesions, the areas treated, the method and the number of sittings, and you are told it after the examination, before treatment begins. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. Nothing is charged that has not been explained to you first.

Is syringoma removal painful?

Numbing cream is applied first, so most people feel brief warmth or a prick at each spot. The eyelids are sensitive, and a small anaesthetic injection can be used if needed. The area may feel a little sore and swollen for a day or two.

Can creams remove syringomas?

Rarely. Retinoid creams and topical atropine are mentioned in dermatology references, but they seldom flatten established syringomas under the eyes. Lightening creams, scrubs and home remedies do not work, because the bumps sit in the deeper skin.

Is it a syringoma or milia?

Milia are pearly white, hard, seed-like dots that can be released through a tiny opening. Syringomas are skin-coloured or yellowish, slightly flat-topped, often merge into clusters on the lower lids, and contain nothing to press out. A dermatologist can usually tell them apart on examination.

Is CO2 laser safe for syringomas on Indian skin?

It can be used, but ablative lasers carry a higher risk of temporary dark or light patches in Indian skin, so settings are kept conservative and treatment is staged. Fine cautery often suits a moderate number of bumps just as well. The method is chosen for your skin type and the number of lesions.
