DPN removal in Gurgaon
Small dark bumps on the cheeks, around the eyes and on the neck, examined and removed by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar. Each bump is checked before it is treated, and the depth is kept as shallow as possible so the skin heals without a mark.
What is DPN and how is it removed?
DPN removal in Gurgaon is a quick in-clinic procedure in which a dermatologist removes dermatosis papulosa nigra, the harmless small dark bumps common on Indian faces, using a fine electrocautery or radiofrequency tip under numbing cream. Most bumps are cleared in one sitting and the tiny scabs fall off within one to two weeks. DPN is not dangerous, and new bumps can appear over the years.
DPN removal in Gurgaon, in short
Typical features of DPN removal. Your own plan depends on how many bumps you have, where they sit, your skin type and how your skin heals.
What is DPN, and why do so many Indians get it?
Dermatosis papulosa nigra, usually shortened to DPN, is a harmless skin growth that appears as small, smooth, dark brown or black bumps, typically 1 to 5 mm across. DermNet, the New Zealand dermatology reference, describes them as appearing mainly on the cheeks and forehead, sometimes spreading to the neck, upper back and chest. They do not scale, crust or ulcerate.
DPN is far more common in darker skin types, Fitzpatrick types IV to VI, which includes most Indian skin. It often runs in families, tends to begin in adolescence or early adulthood, and the bumps usually grow larger and more numerous with age. WebMD notes that women are affected about twice as often as men. Under the microscope a DPN papule looks the same as a small seborrhoeic keratosis, so many dermatologists see it as a variant of that common benign growth.
DPN is not contagious, is not caused by poor hygiene, and does not turn into cancer. People ask to remove it because it changes how the face looks, because a bump catches on a towel, razor or necklace, or because makeup sits unevenly over it. None of these is a medical need, which is exactly why the method has to leave the skin looking better than the bumps did.
DPN does not fade with creams, scrubs or skin-lightening products. Bleaching creams do not lighten the bumps and can irritate the surrounding skin, which makes them stand out more.
DPN vs skin tags, moles, warts and seborrhoeic keratosis
Several small growths look alike in a mirror. Telling them apart matters, because each is treated differently and a few should not simply be burnt off. A dermatologist confirms the diagnosis, usually with a dermatoscope.
DPN
Many small, smooth, dark, slightly raised bumps clustered on the cheeks, around the eyes and on the neck. They sit flat on the skin rather than hanging, appear gradually from the teens onwards and are often present in parents or siblings.
Skin tags
Soft, skin-coloured or light brown flaps on a narrow stalk, mostly on the neck, underarms, eyelids and groin. They hang from the skin, which DPN does not, and are more common with friction, weight gain and diabetes.
Moles
Usually fewer, often larger, and present from childhood or early adult life. A mole that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds or looks different from the rest needs a proper check before any removal.
Warts
Rough, grainy bumps caused by a virus, often on the hands, face or beard area. Unlike DPN they can spread with shaving or picking and to other people, so they are treated with that in mind.
Seborrhoeic keratosis
Larger, waxy, 'stuck-on' brown patches, usually after 40, on the face, chest and back. They are the same family of growth as DPN, just bigger, and are removed in a similar way.
Syringoma and milia
Skin-coloured or white bumps under the eyes. They are not dark like DPN and need different handling, so they are separated from DPN at the examination.
Which DPN removal method is best for Indian skin?
DermNet lists curettage, freezing, electrocautery and Nd:YAG laser as recognised treatments, and stresses keeping treatment superficial to limit scarring. The difference for Indian skin is how much each method risks a dark or pale mark around the bump.
| Fine electrocautery or radiofrequency | Laser, freezing and scraping | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | A very fine tip delivers controlled electrical energy to each bump, removing it layer by layer and sealing tiny vessels. | Laser: light energy aimed at the pigment and tissue. Freezing (cryotherapy): liquid nitrogen. Curettage: the bump is scraped off with a small instrument. |
| Precision | Very high; each papule is treated individually and depth is controlled by eye. | Laser can be precise but treats a spot of fixed size. Freezing spreads beyond the bump. Curettage is precise but leaves an open base. |
| Risk of marks in darker skin | Low when the setting is gentle and the treatment stays shallow; temporary darkening can still occur. | Freezing can leave pale patches in darker skin because pigment cells are sensitive to cold. Laser and curettage carry a risk of darkening if settings or depth are not suited to the skin type. |
| Numbing | Numbing cream is usually enough. | Numbing cream for laser and curettage; freezing is often done without. |
| Healing | Tiny scabs for about a week; pink or dark tint fades over weeks. | Similar for laser and curettage. Freezing can blister and take longer. |
| Best suited to | Most DPN, from a few bumps to many, including around the eyes. | Laser: selected cases and clinics with suitable devices. Freezing and curettage: generally less favoured for DPN in darker skin. |
There is no single best device. What protects Indian skin most is a shallow, bump-by-bump technique, a test area when many bumps are treated, and strict sun protection afterwards. The same electrocautery approach is used for skin tags and warts, explained on their own pages linked below.
How DPN removal works, step by step
Simple DPN can often be treated at the first visit once the diagnosis is clear and the skin is not tanned or irritated.
Examination
Dr. Tanya examines the bumps, usually with a dermatoscope, to confirm they are DPN and to pick out any mole or lesion that needs a closer look. Medicines, blood thinners, keloid tendency and implanted devices are reviewed.
Plan and consent
You are told how many bumps can be treated in one sitting, what the healing will look like, the chance of temporary darkening and the likelihood of new bumps in future. You sign a consent form before anything is done.
Treatment
The skin is cleaned and numbing cream applied. Each bump is lightly treated with the fine tip until it lifts away, leaving a tiny flat crust. The time taken depends mainly on the number of bumps.
Review
Healing is checked at a follow-up. Any bump that was missed or partly treated can be touched up, and any darkening is treated early with sun protection and topical care.
What healing looks like after DPN removal
Day 0 to 1: the treated spots look like small flat brown or grey crusts, sometimes with mild redness and slight swelling, especially around the eyes. Most people return to work the same day or the next.
Day 2 to 10: the crusts darken slightly and then fall off on their own, usually within one to two weeks. Picking them early is the most common cause of a mark. Makeup is avoided on the treated spots until advised.
Week 2 to 8: the new skin underneath is pink at first. In Indian skin it may look a little darker or lighter than its surroundings for some weeks. This usually settles with time and strict sunscreen, and persistent darkening is treated rather than left to chance.
The result is smoother skin with the bumps gone. Treated bumps rarely come back in the same spot, but DPN is driven by genes and age, so new bumps can form elsewhere over the years. Many people choose a short top-up session when that happens, rather than waiting for a large number to build up.
Plan removal at least two weeks before a wedding, photo shoot or holiday. The face looks best once the crusts have fallen off and any pink tint has begun to settle.
Is DPN removal safe, and what are the side effects?
Expected effects are mild stinging during treatment, slight redness and swelling for a day or two and tiny crusts for about a week. The University of Iowa Health Care patient guide on DPN lists pigment changes and, rarely, scarring as the main risks of electrodesiccation, which matches what dermatologists see in darker skin.
The most common problem in Indian skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a temporary dark mark where a bump was. It is reduced by a gentle, shallow technique, treating a small test area first when there are many bumps, avoiding treatment on tanned skin and using sunscreen strictly afterwards. Less common problems are a pale spot, infection if crusts are picked, and in people prone to keloids, a raised scar, which is why that history is asked about first.
Please do not burn, cut, tie off or apply acids to DPN at home, and avoid salon removal. Home removal often leaves a dark scar larger than the bump, and it removes the chance for a doctor to spot a mole or other lesion hiding among the DPN.
Before and after DPN removal
Before
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning and facials on the area for two weeks before.
- Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids a few days before, as advised.
- Tell the clinic about blood thinners, keloids, cold sores and any pacemaker or implanted device.
- Arrive with a clean face and no makeup, and allow time for numbing.
After
- Wash gently with water or a mild cleanser and apply the ointment advised.
- Let the crusts fall off on their own; do not scrub, pick or peel them.
- Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily for at least two to three months.
- Restart retinoids and acids only when advised, usually once the skin has healed.
DPN removal cost in Gurgaon
The cost of DPN removal depends mainly on how many bumps are treated, the areas involved (face only, or neck and chest as well) and whether a follow-up touch-up is needed. You are told the cost after the examination, before treatment begins.
Why a cheap per-spot price can cost more
DPN removal is quick, which makes it easy to do badly. Treating too deep, freezing darker skin or removing bumps without checking them first can leave marks that take months of treatment to fade. Compare the examination, the technique and the aftercare, not only the price per bump.
When DPN removal is not the right choice yet
Removal is postponed when the skin is tanned, sunburnt, infected or inflamed, and when there are cold sores near the area, because healing is poorer and the risk of dark marks is higher. It is also usually deferred in pregnancy unless a bump is bleeding or catching, simply because there is no medical need to treat a harmless growth then.
If you have a strong tendency to keloids, the benefit of removing small, harmless bumps is weighed carefully against the risk of a raised scar. And if you have only a few faint bumps that do not bother you, leaving them alone is a perfectly reasonable choice. DPN causes no harm, and a dermatologist will tell you so.
DPN removal by a skin specialist
DPN removal looks like the simplest procedure in dermatology, and the quality of the result depends almost entirely on judgement: recognising which dark bump is DPN and which is a mole, how lightly to treat thin skin under the eyes, how much to do in one sitting on skin that marks easily, and when to stop. Each DPN plan at Le Dermaire is made and carried out by Dr. Tanya, who also treats any darkening early if it appears.
Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.
DPN removal FAQs
Is DPN removal permanent?
A bump that has been removed properly rarely returns in the same spot. However, DPN is largely genetic and increases with age, so new bumps can appear elsewhere over the years. Many people have a short top-up session every few years when new ones build up.
Does DPN removal leave marks?
Most spots heal flat with little visible trace. In Indian skin a treated spot can look darker or lighter for some weeks, which usually settles with sunscreen and time. Keeping the treatment shallow, not picking the crusts and avoiding treatment on tanned skin reduce the chance of a lasting mark.
Is DPN removal painful?
Numbing cream is applied first, so most people feel only a brief prick or warmth at each bump. Thin skin around the eyes can feel more sensitive. The area may feel slightly sore for a day.
How many sessions are needed to remove DPN?
Most people need a single sitting, sometimes with a brief touch-up at the follow-up for bumps that were very small or partly treated. People with a large number of bumps may have them treated in stages, starting with a test area. The plan is made at the examination.
How much does DPN removal cost in Gurgaon?
At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the number of bumps and the areas treated, and is confirmed after the examination, before treatment starts. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.
Is laser better than electrocautery for DPN?
Not necessarily. Both can work well, and recognised treatments include electrocautery, laser, curettage and freezing. In Indian skin, a precise, shallow technique matters more than the type of device, and fine electrocautery or radiofrequency allows each bump to be treated individually with good control.
Can DPN be removed at home or with creams?
No. No cream removes DPN, and burning, cutting or applying acids at home often leaves a dark scar bigger than the bump. Home removal also means no one has checked whether a dark spot is actually DPN or a mole that needs examination.
