MNRF treatment in Gurgaon

Microneedling radiofrequency for depressed acne scars, enlarged pores and uneven texture, planned and set by dermatologist Dr. Tanya Kochhar. Needle depth and energy are chosen for your scars and your skin type, and reset at every session.

Quick answer

What is MNRF treatment and how many sessions are needed?

MNRF, or microneedling radiofrequency, uses fine needles that release radiofrequency heat deep in the skin to rebuild collagen under acne scars and enlarged pores. At Le Dermaire, Dr. Tanya Kochhar plans typically 3 to 6 sessions, 4 to 6 weeks apart, often combined with subcision. Expect 2 to 4 days of redness and gradual improvement, not erasure.

What it is

What MNRF actually does

MNRF combines two collagen triggers in one pass. A handpiece presses a small grid of fine needles into the skin to a chosen depth, and the needle tips then release a short burst of radiofrequency energy. The needles create tiny channels, as ordinary microneedling does, while the heat at their tips tightens and remodels collagen in the dermis, the deeper layer where acne scars are anchored.

Because most of the heat is delivered below the surface, the outer skin is largely spared. This is why MNRF is widely used in Indian skin: lasers that heat the surface strongly carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark patches that can follow a procedure. MNRF still carries some of that risk, but less, and the settings can be tuned area by area.

MNRF makes depressed scars shallower, softens their edges and tightens the skin around enlarged pores. It does not erase scars, and it does little for scars that are tethered down by fibrous bands unless those bands are released with subcision. A good plan uses it for what it does well and adds other methods where it does not.

Active acne is controlled before MNRF begins. Needling over inflamed spots raises the risk of infection and dark marks, and new pimples keep creating new scars.

Who it suits

What MNRF is used for

MNRF is most useful where the problem sits in the dermis and the surface needs to be treated gently.

Boxcar acne scars

Wide, flat-bottomed dents with defined edges on the cheeks and temples. Heat at the needle tips remodels the collagen at their base and softens the edges over a course.

Rolling acne scars

Broad, wave-like dips. MNRF improves the surrounding skin, while subcision is usually needed first to release the bands pulling the scars down.

Enlarged pores

Pores that look larger with age or after years of oily skin. Collagen tightening around the pore makes it less visible; it does not close it.

Texture and early laxity

Rough, uneven texture and mild loss of firmness on the lower face, where radiofrequency adds a gentle tightening effect.

Darker skin types

Fitzpatrick types III to V, common in India, who need collagen work with a lower risk of pigment changes than strong surface resurfacing.

Less suited

Deep, narrow ice pick scars respond better to focused methods, and raised or keloidal scars need a different approach altogether.

Side by side

MNRF, microneedling or fractional laser: which should I choose?

All three build new collagen. They differ in where the energy goes, how strong each session is and how much risk they carry for Indian skin. The table compares MNRF with each.

MNRFMicroneedling and fractional laser
How it worksFine needles release radiofrequency heat at their tips in the deeper skin.Microneedling: needles alone, with no heat. Fractional laser: laser energy in a grid of microscopic columns.
Strength per sessionModerate to strong; heat adds collagen tightening to the needle effect.Microneedling is milder. Fractional laser is stronger on surface texture.

DowntimeTypically 2 to 4 days of redness, swelling and pinpoint marks.Microneedling: 1 to 3 days. Fractional laser: redness and fine bronzing for several days.
In darker Indian skinLess heat at the surface, so a lower risk of dark marks than surface resurfacing.Microneedling: low risk. Fractional laser: higher risk, reduced by conservative settings.

These are not rivals so much as tools for different jobs. Many scar plans use microneedling or MNRF as the base, add subcision for tethered scars and fractional laser for sharp edges. Microneedling and fractional laser each have their own guide, linked below.

At Le Dermaire

How an MNRF course works

Nothing is needled on the first visit unless the plan is clear and the skin is ready.

1

Consultation

Dr. Tanya checks for active acne, maps scars by type and depth under side lighting, and asks about isotretinoin, cold sores, keloids and any metal implants or pacemaker. You get a plan and a written quote.

2

Preparation

Active acne is treated first. Skin prone to dark marks may be primed with a topical routine and strict sunscreen for a few weeks before the first session.

3

The session

Numbing cream is applied for 30 to 60 minutes. The handpiece is passed over each area with depth and energy set for that zone, which takes around 20 to 40 minutes for the full face.

4

Review and adjust

Healing and progress are checked before each further session. Depth, energy and any added method such as subcision are changed according to how the skin responded.

Combinations

What MNRF is combined with

MNRF alone rarely gives the best result for acne scars. These are the methods it is most often paired with, each explained in full on its own page.

Subcision

Rolling scars are held down by fibrous bands that no surface treatment can release. Subcision cuts these bands with a fine needle under local anaesthetic, and MNRF then remodels the freed skin. The two are often done in the same course, with subcision in the earlier sessions.

PRF

Platelet-rich fibrin from your own blood can be applied or injected during a session, where it may support healing and add modest lift under scars.

Fractional laser

Sharp-edged boxcar and ice pick scars may need the stronger surface effect of fractional laser in some sessions, alternated with MNRF.

Results

What results to expect, and when

In the first week the skin may look slightly plumper as swelling settles, which is not the real result. Collagen remodelling builds over the following weeks and continues for three to six months after each session, so most people notice a clear difference only after the second or third session, and the final result is judged a few months after the last.

Moderate boxcar and rolling scars usually become noticeably shallower and the skin smoother, so makeup sits better and side lighting is less unkind. Deep scars improve less per session, and very deep or tethered scars need subcision or other methods alongside. Pores look smaller and tighter but do not disappear. The new collagen is your own and lasts, though skin keeps ageing and occasional maintenance sessions may help.

Photographs are taken in the same light at the start and at reviews. Scar improvement is gradual, and comparing photos is more reliable than the mirror.

Why the cheapest session is rarely the cheapest course

MNRF is set by needle depth, energy and number of passes, and too little does nothing while too much risks dark marks in Indian skin. A low price for a single session tells you little. Compare the full course needed for your scar types, and whether tethered scars will be released, rather than the price per visit.

Safety

Is MNRF safe, and what are the side effects?

Expected effects are redness, swelling, a warm or sunburnt feel and a grid of tiny pinpoint marks or scabs, which usually settle over two to four days. The skin may feel dry and look slightly rough for a week as fine crusts shed.

The main risk in Indian skin is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is reduced by conservative energy, priming, adequate gaps between sessions and strict sun protection, and treated promptly if it appears. Less common problems include acne flares, infection, a cold sore outbreak in people prone to them, and, rarely, small marks from the needle grid if energy is too high. People prone to keloids are assessed carefully first.

MNRF is usually postponed in pregnancy, over active acne, infection or cold sores, and after recent isotretinoin until assessed. Tell the clinic about a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, metal implants in the face, and blood thinners.

Why a dermatologist

MNRF planned by a skin specialist

MNRF looks simple, but the result depends on choices made at every pass: needle depth for thick cheek skin versus thin temples, energy for darker skin, when to add subcision, and when to stop. A dermatologist can also treat the acne still causing new scars, recognise scars that need a different tool, and manage pigmentation early if it appears, which is why each MNRF plan at Le Dermaire is made and supervised by Dr. Tanya.

Dr. Tanya Kochhar holds an MBBS from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, an MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy from MGM Medical College, a DNB, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Aesthetic Dermatology (FRGUHS). She is registered with the National Medical Commission and the Delhi Medical Council.

Common questions

MNRF treatment FAQs

How many MNRF sessions are needed for acne scars?

Most people need three to six sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart. Mild scarring may need fewer, while deep or widespread scars often need more, usually combined with subcision for rolling scars. Collagen keeps building for months after each session, so improvement continues after the course ends.

How much does MNRF cost in Gurgaon?

At Le Dermaire the cost depends on the area treated, the number of sessions and whether methods such as subcision or PRF are combined, and is quoted in writing after the consultation. The consultation fee is Rs 1,800. There are no charges that are not quoted to you first.

Is MNRF better than microneedling?

MNRF is stronger per session because radiofrequency heat adds collagen tightening to the needle effect, so it usually suits moderate boxcar and rolling scars better. Plain microneedling is gentler, has shorter downtime and suits mild scars, pores and rejuvenation. The choice depends on scar depth, skin type and how much downtime you can take.

Is MNRF better than fractional laser for acne scars?

Neither is better in every case. MNRF delivers heat deep in the skin with less surface injury, which suits many Indian skin types and boxcar or rolling scars. Fractional laser resurfaces the surface more strongly and helps sharp-edged and ice pick scars. Many plans use both, with subcision for tethered scars.

Is MNRF painful?

Numbing cream is applied for 30 to 60 minutes first, so most people feel pressure, warmth and prickling rather than pain. Bony areas such as the temples and jawline are more sensitive. The skin feels sunburnt for a day or two afterwards.

What is the downtime after MNRF?

Expect redness, swelling and tiny pinpoint marks for typically two to four days, with fine dry flakes for up to a week. Most people return to work within a day or two with light makeup once advised. Evening and weekend sessions help you plan around it.

Is MNRF safe for Indian skin?

Yes, when settings are chosen for the skin type. Because most of the heat is delivered below the surface, MNRF carries a lower risk of dark marks than strong surface resurfacing. Priming, conservative energy, enough time between sessions and strict sun protection reduce the risk further.

Does MNRF work for open pores?

It can make enlarged pores look smaller by tightening the collagen around them, typically over three to five sessions. It does not close pores, and oily, congested pores also need a retinoid and oil control at home. Small acne scars that look like pores respond well to MNRF.

Can I have MNRF after isotretinoin?

Timing is decided case by case. Older advice was to wait six to twelve months after stopping isotretinoin; more recent evidence suggests gentle procedures may be safe sooner in some people. Dr. Tanya reviews your dose, when you stopped and how your skin is healing before booking.
